Before you go: Johannesburg has real violent-crime risk, and it’s also a city most visitors get through cleanly with the right habits. Use Uber or Bolt, not walking, especially downtown or after dark. Take the Gautrain between OR Tambo, Sandton, and Pretoria. Keep car doors locked and stay alert at traffic lights. Do Soweto on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton is the lower-risk base for this plan. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Five days adds a genuine malaria-free Pilanesberg safari to the history-Soweto-Cradle-Pretoria spine. Base in Sandton, move by Gautrain and Uber in the city, and budget the extra driving time for Pilanesberg.
Book these before you go:
- A guided Soweto tour , including Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum
- A Cradle of Humankind tour , or a rental car if you’d rather self-drive
- A Pilanesberg safari tour , guided game drives are the easier call for first-timers
- A Sandton hotel , for Gautrain access and the safest base
Day 1: Apartheid history and Maboneng
Apartheid Museum in Ormonde: your ticket randomly assigns a “White” or “Non-White” entrance at the turnstile; allow 2.5-3+ hours, admission roughly R85-120. Afternoon: Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, the Old Fort prison complex beside the Constitutional Court. Evening: Uber to Maboneng for dinner, Uber straight back.
Day 2: Guided Soweto day
A half-day guided Soweto tour: Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial, covering the 16 June 1976 Soweto Uprising soberly. Take a shisa nyama lunch stop if offered. Evening in Sandton or Rosebank.
Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind
A full day, ~40-50km northwest. UNESCO World Heritage Site (1999) , covering the Sterkfontein Caves (Mrs Ples, Little Foot, Homo naledi) and the Maropeng Visitor Centre. Tours run hourly Tuesday-Sunday, roughly 9am-4pm (closed Monday); confirm Sterkfontein’s current reopening status.
Day 4: Pretoria’s Union Buildings
Gautrain from Sandton to Pretoria, about an hour, no car needed. The Union Buildings and its Mandela statue, the Voortrekker Monument, and Freedom Park. October visitors get Pretoria’s jacaranda blooms, “the Jacaranda City.” Return by Gautrain for a Sandton or Rosebank dinner.
Day 5: Pilanesberg safari
A genuine malaria-free Big Five safari inside an extinct volcanic crater, roughly 2-3 hours northwest. Pilanesberg is one of the few reserves you can self-drive in a standard car, though a guided game drive from a lodge is the better call for a first safari. Budget the full day for the round trip plus drives; an overnight near the park is worth considering if you’d rather not do the whole thing in a single long day.
The 5-day spine
| Day | Focus | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Maboneng | Uber |
| 2 | Guided Soweto tour | Guided vehicle |
| 3 | Cradle of Humankind | Tour or self-drive |
| 4 | Pretoria | Gautrain |
| 5 | Pilanesberg safari | Guided tour or self-drive |
South Africa’s rand (R) is the currency throughout, and a realistic mid-range daily budget across this trip runs roughly R3,000-3,500/day, safaris being the splurge day.
Trim back to the 4-day itinerary if a safari doesn’t fit, or extend to the 6-day itinerary to give Pilanesberg a full overnight.
One concrete move: if you can only add one day trip beyond the city core, make it Pilanesberg over a second city day. It’s the one experience on this list you genuinely can’t get inside Johannesburg itself.
