Djerba 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Four days keeps the 3-day plan’s island core intact and adds the first mainland excursion, the Matmata-Tataouine loop, on day four. Shorter trip, drop back to the 3-day plan; more time, the 5-day plan onward adds extra beach days around this same base. The full sight list and food notes live in our Djerba guide .
On safety: Tunisia is a US Level 2 advisory country, general terrorism risk, with the actual do-not-travel zones limited to the far-south borders, not Djerba. The one relevant incident, a fatal shooting near El Ghriba Synagogue on 9 May 2023, was a single targeted event with no tourist-directed repeat since; expect routine, visible security rather than anything heavy-handed.
Day 1: Houmt Souk and the beach
Morning in Houmt Souk for the covered souks, the fondouks, and the working fish auction at the port, then Borj el-Kebir (Borj Ghazi Mustapha), the 15th-16th-century fort, for around 8 TND. Afternoon at a resort beach, Sidi Mahrès (the main Zone Touristique strip, ~13 km) or the quieter Aghir/La Seguia further south.
Day 2: El Ghriba, Djerbahood, and Guellala
Morning in Erriadh (Hara Seghira) for El Ghriba Synagogue, traditionally the oldest synagogue in Africa (a 19th-century building on a site tradition holds back roughly 2,500 years); dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, and expect a kippah offered at the door. Walk the Djerbahood murals in the same village, around 150 artists and 300+ pieces since 2014, free to see. Afternoon in Guellala, roughly 450 working potters and the Guellala Museum (~10 TND) for the island’s broader heritage.
Day 3: Beach and Djerba Explore Park
Beach in the morning, then Djerba Explore Park in Midoun in the afternoon: the Lalla Hadria Museum of Islamic art, a heritage village, and a crocodile farm holding around 400 Nile crocodiles (feeding time 5pm), combined entry about 20 TND. If day three lands on a Friday, swap in Midoun’s Friday market instead, and if you’re visiting November through March, trade the Explore Park for the boat trip to Ras Rmel (Flamingo Island) for the flamingo colonies.
Day 4: Matmata and Tataouine mainland loop
Take a full day trip to the mainland, roughly 11 hours door-to-door. Matmata has the troglodyte Berber cave-homes, plus Hotel Sidi Driss, the guesthouse used for the interior scenes of Luke Skywalker’s home, still operating with the original cave rooms. From there, continue to Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, a fortified granary complex (ksour) whose stacked storage cells are the visual root of “Tatooine,” and, time allowing, the hilltop Berber villages of Chenini and Douiret. Search Djerba day trips on Viator to compare operators running this loop; going with a driver or guide is easier than self-driving it in a single day.

Note that Mos Espa and the domed Lars homestead exterior are not on this loop; they’re near Tozeur and Chott el Djerid, roughly 300 km and 5 hours 40 minutes away, an overnight trip you’d need a 5-day or longer itinerary for. One concrete tip: carry cash before day four, ATMs thin out fast inland and in the desert. And the underlying rule for the whole trip: the Tunisian dinar is a closed currency, exchange only what you’ll spend and keep every receipt, since just around 30% is reconvertible on departure.
