Bucharest 3 Day Castle Trip (No Traps)
Three days is our 2-day plan plus one long grind day: Bran Castle and Brasov, out and back from Bucharest in a single push. It works, but it’s a real 12-hour day. If that sounds rough, our 4-day version fixes it by staying the night in Brasov instead.

Day 1: Land, settle in, don’t sightsee yet
From Henri Coanda airport, take the direct rail shuttle to Gara de Nord, about 6.50 RON and 20-25 minutes, or Express Bus 100 for roughly 3 RON and 40-50 minutes into Piata Unirii. Skip any plan to take a metro from the airport, that link is Line M6, still under construction. Check into Old Town, eat mici and drink a cold beer, sleep early. The next two days both start with a train.
Day 2: Peles and Pelisor castles, Sinaia
Trains from Gara de Nord to Sinaia run several times daily, roughly 75-90 minutes, fares around 35-45 RON each way; check schedules at cfrcalatori.ro . Peles Castle, King Carol I’s 1873-1914 summer residence, runs a timed-slot system since June 2025 with a 2,000-visitor daily cap, book ahead. Full entry is 100 RON adult, 25 RON student; see peles.ro for hours and booking. Pelisor next door adds 30 RON and its own 1,500-visitor cap. Back to Bucharest by evening.
Day 3: Bran Castle and Brasov, the honest long day
This is the day that makes or breaks a 3-day trip: roughly 500km round trip and up to 12 hours if you’re doing it from a Bucharest bed both nights. Bran Castle’s “Dracula” branding is a 1970s tourism invention, Bram Stoker never visited Romania, and Vlad the Impaler’s link to Bran is largely debunked, but the 13th-century hilltop fortress and Queen Marie’s real history still make it worth the entry fee, roughly 120 RON adult, 60 RON child, 90 RON senior. Check current hours and pricing at bran-castle.com . Spend more of the day in Brasov itself than at Bran; the Saxon old town and the soot-blackened Black Church genuinely outshine the castle.
Is a same-day Bran and Brasov trip from Bucharest worth it?
Only if three days is genuinely all you have. It’s a full, tiring day, most of it on trains and connecting transport, with maybe 4-5 hours of actual sightseeing to show for it. If Bran and Brasov matter enough that you want to enjoy them rather than survive them, add a fourth day and stay the night in Brasov; the difference in how the trip feels is significant.
Before you go
Book the Peles timed slot and, if you’re doing the day 3 combo tour, reserve it a few days ahead in summer; both sell out. Pack a full day’s worth of snacks and water for day 3, station food options are limited outside Gara de Nord itself. And confirm your day 3 return train time before you leave Bucharest in the morning, the last direct services back from Brasov run earlier in the evening than most first-timers expect.
