Bucharest 2 Day Castle Trip (No Traps)
Two days is enough for exactly one mountain day trip, not more. Land in Bucharest, sleep off the flight, then spend day two on Peles and Pelisor castles in Sinaia by train. Bran, Brasov, and Sighisoara all sit further north and need more days than this trip has; save them for our 4-day or 7-day version instead.

Day 1: Land, settle in, don’t sightsee yet
From Henri Coanda airport, take the direct rail shuttle to Gara de Nord, about 6.50 RON and 20-25 minutes on a dedicated track, or Express Bus 100 for roughly 3 RON if you don’t mind 40-50 minutes into Piata Unirii. Skip the idea of a metro transfer entirely, the airport line is still-under-construction Line M6, not the existing M4. Check into an Old Town hotel, have an early dinner of mici and a cold beer, and go to bed. Day two starts with a train, not a lie-in.
Day 2: Peles and Pelisor castles, Sinaia
Trains from Gara de Nord to Sinaia run several times a day, roughly 75-90 minutes, fares around 35-45 RON each way; check current times at cfrcalatori.ro before you leave. Peles Castle, King Carol I’s opulent 1873-1914 summer residence, now runs a timed-slot booking system with a 2,000-visitor daily cap introduced in June 2025, book ahead rather than risk a sold-out afternoon. Full tour entry is 100 RON for adults, 25 RON for students; see peles.ro for current hours and the booking portal. Pelisor, the smaller Art Nouveau castle next door, adds 30 RON and is worth the extra hour, its own separate 1,500-visitor cap applies too. Train back to Bucharest by early evening.
Is two days enough for Bucharest’s castles?
Enough for one, not more. Peles fits comfortably into a single day trip from Bucharest with time to spare. Bran, Brasov, and Sighisoara each need either a full day of their own or an overnight, and cramming any of them into this trip alongside Peles turns a good day into a 12-hour grind. If Bran and Brasov matter to you, this isn’t the itinerary; ours that run 4 days or longer are.
Before you go
Book the Peles timed slot online before you fly, walk-up tickets are no longer a safe bet in peak season. Carry small RON notes for the Sinaia train and any station kiosks, card acceptance on regional lines is inconsistent. And don’t let a Bucharest taxi talk you into a flat “castle tour” rate at the airport, the train is cheaper, faster, and skips the overcharge risk entirely. Romania’s official tourism site is a decent backup for current opening hours if a museum or castle page hasn’t updated.
