Day 1: The Acropolis, done at the right hour
Book the 8am slot through hhticket.gr, especially June through August, since peak slots vanish five to seven days out. Entry is 30 EUR flat, timed, capped at roughly 20,000 visitors a day. Go straight to the Acropolis Museum after: 20 EUR flat, worth the full two hours it deserves.
Day 2: Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Plaka, Anafiotika
Morning at the Ancient Agora, 8 EUR in summer, 4 in winter. The Temple of Hephaestus here is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple standing anywhere. Push past Plaka’s overpriced main lanes into Anafiotika, fewer than fifty whitewashed houses built overnight in the 1840s. Dinner in Psyrri if you want noise, Koukaki if you do not.
Day 3: National Archaeological Museum, Monastiraki, Psyrri
Get to the National Archaeological Museum early. Twenty euros flat, worth every minute of two hours: Mycenaean gold masks, the Antikythera Mechanism. Lunch at Varvakios market on Athinas Street, running since 1886. Monastiraki’s flea market in the afternoon, Psyrri for dinner.
Day 4: Syntagma, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Lycabettus
Time your morning at Syntagma Square for the changing of the guard, longer on Sunday. The Temple of Olympian Zeus, 8 EUR full price, sits a five-minute walk away. Sunset from Mount Lycabettus, roughly 7 to 10 EUR one-way by funicular, beats the view from the Acropolis itself. Dinner in Kolonaki.
Day 5: Koukaki, Panathenaic Stadium, Kolonaki
Spend the morning actually in Koukaki: good coffee, quiet residential lanes, none of Plaka’s souvenir saturation. The Panathenaic Stadium, the all-marble 1896 Olympics venue, is a quick stop, roughly 10 EUR. Afternoon in Kolonaki, upscale and boutique-heavy at the foot of Lycabettus.
Day 6: Cycladic Art or Benaki Museum, Exarcheia, Gazi
Pick one collection over the other rather than rushing both: the Museum of Cycladic Art, for the stark marble figurines that influenced Modigliani and Picasso, or the Benaki Museum’s main branch, for a broader sweep of Greek art across centuries. Either gets a fraction of the National Archaeological Museum’s crowds despite the quality on the walls. Walk through Exarcheia in the afternoon for street art and cafes, edgier than Kolonaki but fine in daylight, then head to Gazi for dinner near the old gasworks turned Technopolis cultural complex, which runs live music and exhibitions most evenings.
Do you need six full days for just the city?
Yes, if you want the second-tier sights and not just the postcard ones. All six neighborhoods sit on or near the three metro lines , so the extra days add depth, not logistics. By Day 6 you have covered five distinct neighborhoods and three major museums without repeating a single one; that is a genuinely different trip from the version most visitors run in three rushed days.
