Yangon: 10 Things to Do (Skip the Traps)

Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything. Some tourism spending here can still reach the military, so favor small, local, independent operators if you go. This list is for if and when a Yangon trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.
Most Yangon “top things to do” lists are the same six photos in a different order. Here are the ten actually worth your limited time, in the order most people should tackle them, with the skippable padding called out.
1. Shwedagon Pagoda, timed right
The gilded stupa on Singuttara Hill is close to 100 meters of gold leaf, and it’s the one Yangon sight that earns the hype. Shoes and socks off before you step on the platform, no exceptions, and the foreigner fee has historically run around 10,000-15,000 kyat (verify, it changes). Go an hour before sunset and stay into the floodlit evening; midday is hot marble and tour-bus crowds.
2. Sule Pagoda, from the outside
Sule sits in the literal middle of a downtown traffic roundabout, a 2,000-year-old stupa the British built their street grid around. You don’t need long here, ten minutes to appreciate the oddness of it is enough. Skip any tour that spends more than that.
3. Botataung Pagoda, the walkable one
Every other stupa in the city is solid. Botataung is hollow, a mirrored gold-leaf interior maze around relic cases, rebuilt after RAF bombing destroyed it in 1943. It’s cheaper and less crowded than Shwedagon and worth the detour to the riverside.
4. Chaukhtatgyi and Ngahtatgyi Buddhas
Chaukhtatgyi is the giant reclining Buddha, 66 meters, glass eyes, painted soles. Ngahtatgyi nearby is seated, not reclining, easy to confuse the two if a guide rushes you through. Pair them on one stop; entry is modest.
5. Kaba Aye Pagoda and the Maha Pasana Guha cave
Less visited, and better for it. The artificial cave hall hosted the Sixth Buddhist Council in the 1950s. Combine with Chaukhtatgyi and Ngahtatgyi since they’re all in the same northern cluster.
6. The colonial downtown walk
Sule roundabout to City Hall to the old Secretariat, where Aung San was assassinated in 1947 (access has been uncertain since the coup, verify before planning around a tour), then Pansodan Street’s galleries and secondhand book stalls. Decaying and grand at once, that’s the accurate description, not a polished one.
7. Bogyoke Aung San Market, for browsing
Skip any “gem shopping tour” that steers you toward a specific jewelry counter, commission-driven guiding is common here and Myanmar’s jade trade is closely tied to the military and to dangerous mining conditions in Kachin State. The textiles, lacquerware, and handicraft stalls are worth your money instead. Closed Mondays.
8. Yangon Circular Railway, loosely planned
A roughly three-hour loop through the suburbs on a working commuter train, not a tourist product dressed up as one. Ask locally whether the full loop is running before you build a morning around it; partial closures for repairs have been reported. Get off wherever looks interesting.
9. Kandawgyi Lake
The Karaweik, a 1970s concrete replica of a royal barge, is the photo, framed with Shwedagon behind it. Skip actually eating at the Karaweik itself; it’s a tour-group buffet, not a good meal. The walk around the lake is the real reason to come.
10. A real tea shop, not a hotel lounge
Sweet milk tea, fried snacks, and an hour you don’t rush. It’s the cheapest and most honest thing on this list, and closer to how Yangon actually spends an afternoon than anything else here.
