Why Willemstad Needs More Than Three Days
Most ABC Islands itineraries give Willemstad two or three days and call it fair. It is not fair, and the island’s own geography is the reason why.
The problem is that Willemstad is two trips in one. Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai, and Scharloo are compact enough to walk end to end, linked by the Queen Emma pontoon bridge, and two focused days covers the historic core properly, including real time at Kura Hulanda rather than a rushed pass-through. But the western Bandabou beaches and Christoffel National Park are not in walking range of any of that. Reaching them needs a rental car, full stop, and that is a second, separate kind of day that a rushed itinerary tends to cut first.
What gets dropped when the trip is too short. Klein Curaçao is a full-day catamaran commitment on its own, 1.5 to 2 hours each way. A Mount Christoffel summit attempt has to start before 7:30 AM because rangers close the trail at 10:00 AM. A proper Tugboat wreck dive or Hato Caves visit each want a half-day of their own. Stack a 2-day Willemstad stop against that list and something gets cut, usually the thing that required the most planning to begin with.
The ABC hop makes this worse, not better. Curaçao anchors an 8 to 12 day ABC Islands circuit with Aruba and Bonaire, connected by 20 to 25 minute island-hopper flights on carriers like Divi Divi Air, Winair, and EZ Air. Short flights make hopping tempting, and that is exactly how travelers end up giving each island three days instead of the five or more that actually let a Klein Curaçao trip and a Bandabou beach day coexist without a fight over the calendar.
The fix is simple. Budget 4 to 7 days for Willemstad specifically if diving, Klein Curaçao, and the historic core all matter to you, and treat the rest of the ABC circuit as a separate allocation rather than squeezing all three islands into one packed week.
What actually needs the extra days. It is rarely the historic core that gets shortchanged; two focused days there works fine. It is the car-dependent half of the island, the beaches, Christoffel, and the wreck diving, that quietly needs three or four more days than most itineraries budget, precisely because none of it is reachable on foot or on a quick taxi hop from the hotel.
