Everyone photographs the Handelskade’s row of pastel Dutch gables and calls it Willemstad. That row is one street. The city behind it does more, and skipping past it is the actual mistake. The bridge does the work the photo cannot. The Queen Emma pontoon bridge, the “Swinging Old Lady,” floats on 16 pontoon boats and swings 90 degrees open several times a day to let ships through. When it opens, free two-minute pontje ferries take over the crossing.

Every Curaçao romance list leads with a private sunset sail out of Spaanse Water: champagne, charcuterie, a catamaran. It is a fine evening. It is also the same evening every other couple on the island is having, and it skips two things Willemstad actually has that most Caribbean stops do not. Skip the charter, book the fort. Fort Nassau has stood on its hilltop above the city since 1797, and at night the whole fortress lights up over a 360-degree view of the harbor.

Most ABC Islands itineraries give Willemstad two or three days and call it fair. It is not fair, and the island’s own geography is the reason why. The problem is that Willemstad is two trips in one. Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai, and Scharloo are compact enough to walk end to end, linked by the Queen Emma pontoon bridge, and two focused days covers the historic core properly, including real time at Kura Hulanda rather than a rushed pass-through.

Two of Willemstad’s best day trips both eat a full day on their own, and trying to stack them into one is how people end up seeing neither properly. Klein Curaçao, the whole day. This uninhabited coral atoll sits 25 km southeast of the mainland, and getting there by catamaran (operators include BlueFinn Charters, Mermaid Boat Trips, and Miss Ann) takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way across open water. Add the abandoned pink Victorian lighthouse, the rusting wreck of the tanker Maria Bianca Guidesman, and turtle feeding grounds in the shallows, and you have a full day before the return crossing even starts.

A blowhole that fires seawater 50 feet into the air costs nothing to watch. A submerged glass room where you lie down among reef fish costs a paid ticket. Willemstad has both, and it is worth ranking them honestly before you spend a day’s budget. The paid ticket: Curaçao Sea Aquarium and Ocean Lens. The Sea Aquarium runs an open-flow system that pumps real seawater into its lagoons, and the Ocean Lens lets you lie 17 feet underwater in a submerged observatory surrounded by wild reef fish.

A submersible that drops 1,000 feet under Willemstad and a quad bike safari past century-old Arawak cave paintings have nothing to do with a beach chair. That is the point. If you came here expecting adventure tours to mean sunbathing with extra steps, Willemstad’s actual lineup is stranger and better than that. ATV and buggy safaris up north. Guided quad and buggy trips run 3 to 4 hours across the north coast’s limestone plateaus, cactus forest, and blowholes.
