Gothenburg’s animal attractions lean Nordic and conservation-minded rather than exotic, and the best of them cost nothing to walk into.
A free zoo, open every hour of every day
Slottsskogens Djurpark, folded into the public park of the same name since 1876, is one of Sweden’s oldest zoos and, unusually, completely free and open 24 hours a day, year-round. Its collection sticks to native and heritage Nordic species: moose, Gotland Russ ponies, Gute sheep and goats, and Swedish mountain cattle. Zookeepers feed the resident harbor seal colony daily at 14:00 and the Humboldt penguins at 14:30, both at the park’s central ponds, and the seasonal Barnens Zoo (May through September) lets younger children handle friendly goats and sheep directly.
Universeum’s ocean tank and rainforest
Northern Europe’s largest science center, next to Liseberg at Korsvägen, holds two zoological anchors worth the ticket on their own. The 1.4-million-liter ocean tank, walked through via a glass tunnel, houses sand tiger sharks, sawfish, epaulette sharks, and stingrays. The 18,000 cubic meter rainforest dome runs free-roaming Goeldi’s monkeys, two-toed sloths, red-footed tortoises, poison dart frogs, and free-flying toucans, scarlet ibis, and turacos. Wild seals, watched rather than fed
Out in the Northern Archipelago, boat operators working out of Hönö Klåva run non-intrusive seal-watching trips to observe wild harbor seal colonies hauled out in the outer archipelago nature reserves. These are sightseeing trips built around a wild population, not a feeding show, and sightings are not guaranteed on any single outing.
What does not exist here
Two claims are worth ruling out directly. There are no commercial whale-watching tours operating from Gothenburg; stray minke whale or harbor porpoise sightings happen occasionally but are not a bookable product. And there are no animal circuses or dolphinariums in the city: captive dolphin and whale displays are prohibited under Swedish animal welfare law, so treat any listing claiming otherwise as wrong.
