Philadelphia, the practical one

Two Hudson Valley museums, one train stop
Storm King Art Center and Dia:Beacon share the same Metro-North stop at Beacon, about 1h40 from Grand Central. Dia:Beacon is an 8-10 minute walk from the station; Storm King needs a seasonal shuttle or taxi for the remaining 14 miles. Both charge $25 admission, and Storm King runs April-November, closed Tuesdays. Doing both in a single day without a car is a rushed plan, not a comfortable one.
Fire Island, honestly
Fire Island reaches by LIRR to Bay Shore, Sayville, or Patchogue, each connecting to a ferry serving different communities, Sayville’s for Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines among them, and it is genuinely car-free in its residential areas, unlike the Hamptons.
