Walking Tours in Manama and Muharraq
Travel advisory, as of October 2026. Bahrain was struck by Iranian missiles and drones from 28 February 2026. A ceasefire has held since 8 April 2026, with reported violations and later drone and cyber incidents. Airspace and the King Fahd Causeway have closed at short notice. Tourism is open, but check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect tours and events to change at short notice.
Four walks in and around Manama
Manama is walkable in pieces: a heritage trail in Muharraq, the old souq, the Bahrain Bay waterfront and the Adliya gallery district. None is a long hike, because the island is flat and the roads between areas are best covered by taxi. The main limit is the weather. From June to September, 40C and high humidity make midday walking unsafe, so walk early in the morning or after sunset, and carry water. The comfortable season is November to March.
The Muharraq Pearling Path (3.5 km, 2 to 3 hours)
This UNESCO trail is the best walk in Bahrain. It threads the lanes of old Muharraq past 17 restored buildings, traditional wind towers and small public squares, and its design won an Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019. Highlights include Siyadi House and Kurar House, and the route ends near Bu Maher Fort on the shore. The trail is free, with visitor centres open from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Tuesdays, where you can pick up a map. A boat shuttle runs between the National Museum car park and Bu Maher Fort; the official site says every 45 minutes, so check the timing before relying on it.
Souq walk from Bab Al Bahrain (1.5 to 2 hours)
Start at the arched gate of Bab Al Bahrain and walk into the covered lanes. You pass the textile stalls, the spice lanes with saffron and sumac, and the Gold Souq. The Shri Krishna Temple, founded in 1817, reflects the long Indian merchant presence in the city. Stalls are busiest in the evening, and cash in small notes is useful for cafes and stalls. Bargain politely, and dress modestly.
Bahrain Bay waterfront (about 1 hour)
A newer, landscaped promenade runs from near the National Museum and Theatre along the reclaimed shoreline of Bahrain Bay, with the spiralling United Tower on the far side and the promenade of The Avenues mall. It is the easiest walk in summer once the sun is down. The Bahrain World Trade Center is a good photo subject from here, but it has no public viewing deck.
Block 338, Adliya (about 1 hour)
This arts district has murals, sculptures, boutique cafes and galleries along tree-lined lanes. It works in the morning for coffee or in the evening for dinner. Licensed restaurants serve alcohol, but public drunkenness is an offence and the drink-driving limit is zero.
