Guided Attraction Tours in Manama
Travel advisory, as of October 2026. Bahrain was struck by Iranian missiles and drones from 28 February 2026. A ceasefire has held since 8 April 2026, with reported violations and later drone and cyber incidents. Airspace and the King Fahd Causeway have closed at short notice. Tourism is open, but check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect tours and events to change at short notice.
Guided tours worth knowing about
Manama’s best guided experiences are cultural: Dilmun archaeology, pearling history and Islamic architecture. Most are short, cheap and run by official bodies, with longer coach tours from private operators. Tours can be rescheduled or cancelled on security grounds, so confirm the day before.
Al Fateh Grand Mosque
Non-Muslim visitors can join a guided visit of about 45 minutes, which covers prayer, calligraphy, the dome and local social history. Reported visiting hours are 09:00 to 16:00 Saturday to Thursday, and the mosque is closed on Fridays and during prayer, so call or check before you go. Entry is free, with registration at the visitor desk. Modest dress is required, and abayas are provided. Treat it as a place of worship: keep your voice low and ask before photographing people.
The Pearling Path
The Pearling Path in Muharraq is a UNESCO site that links 17 historic buildings, three offshore oyster beds and Bu Maher Fort over a 3.5 km trail. Guides explain how the divers (ghawwas), boat captains (nokhada) and merchants (tawwash) were organised, and how the industry collapsed after cultured pearls arrived in the 1930s. The visitor centres are open from 10:00 to 18:00 and are closed on Tuesdays; one tourism page gives 09:00 as the opening time, so allow for either. See pearlingpath.bh for the current schedule.
A boat shuttle runs from the National Museum car park to Bu Maher Fort. The official site says every 45 minutes, while another guide says every 15 minutes, so plan for the longer wait.
Full-day island coach tours
Local companies such as Visit Bahrain and Tejwal Bahrain run coach and minibus tours. A typical day covers Bahrain Fort, the National Museum, the pottery workshops at A’ali, the Royal Camel Farm at Janabiyah, the Tree of Life and sometimes the King Fahd Causeway viewpoint. Reported prices run from about BD 20 for a half-day to BD 35 for a full day with transport, a guide and entry fees. Check what is included before you book.
There is no open-top hop-on hop-off bus in the city, so sightseeing is by coach, minibus or private car.
Museum guides
The Qal’at al-Bahrain museum desk offers free guided tours and audioguides, but the site and museum are closed on Mondays. The National Museum is closed on Tuesdays. Fees at both are about BD 2, so confirm at the door.
Conduct and safety
- Dress modestly at every cultural site, with covered shoulders and knees.
- Photography is welcome at museums and historic sites, but not of government, military or security installations such as the naval base at Juffair.
- Tours between June and September should start early, because outdoor sites reach 40C or more. Carry water and take breaks in the shade.
