Sightseeing Around Kendwa and Nungwi
Advisory, October 2026: The US State Department lists Tanzania at Level 3, Reconsider Travel (travel.state.gov ). The UK does not advise against travel to Zanzibar, but says protests are possible, internet access can be cut and photographing protests is illegal. Stay away from any crowd or demonstration, and read the UK travel advice before you go.
Sightseeing Around Kendwa and Nungwi
Kendwa is a beach resort village, so sightseeing here means views and nearby local life instead of monuments. The village has no historic buildings, no fort and no mosque open to visitors. What it offers is scenery and a short trip north to Nungwi, with Stone Town as the day out for architecture.
The sunset
The bay faces west, which makes sunset the main sight. Dhows and small ngalawa outrigger canoes cross the water as the light fades. Find a spot on the sand early, since the beach hotels provide loungers to guests and diners. Public access to the beach is free.
Tumbatu Island
Tumbatu lies across the channel and is visible from the shore. A guided cultural visit is possible through operators in Kendwa and Nungwi, and it depends on permission from the community elders. Visitors dress modestly and do not wear beachwear. Independent landing is not an option.
Nungwi: boatyard and fish market
Nungwi, about 3 km north of Kendwa, sits at the northern tip of the island. Its boatyard builds dhows by hand and its fish market is liveliest early in the morning, a visit that Wikivoyage’s Nungwi guide recommends. You can reach Nungwi by taxi, by boat from Kendwa, or by walking at low tide. The Mnarani turtle pond is also in Nungwi and is a place to look at turtles that are cared for there, not to handle them.
Stone Town
Stone Town is the sightseeing day trip, about 60 km away and 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by car. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), the Anglican Cathedral and the Forodhani waterfront. The House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib) is a landmark to see from outside, since it has been reported closed or under restoration. Opening hours and prices for individual sites change, so ask locally before you go. Search Stone Town tours
Out on the water
A boat trip to Mnemba Atoll shows the reef from above and below. The island is a private concession and closed to landing. Marine fees run to US$10 per adult for the conservation area, and US$25 inside the Special Area. A sunset dhow cruise is a gentler way to see the coast.
Practical notes
- The best light is in the early morning and around sunset.
- Take a hat, water and sun protection, since there is little shade on the open sand.
- Dress modestly in villages by covering shoulders and knees.
- Beach vendors sell boat trips. Book marine trips through hotel desks or registered operators.
- Walk in daylight and not alone on quiet stretches.
- Foreign visitors must buy Zanzibar’s compulsory insurance before arrival, US$44 per adult for up to 92 days, at visitzanzibar.go.tz .
