Walking Routes Through Nice
Nice’s four best walking routes cover four different kinds of terrain, from cobbled market square to pine forest fortress, and none needs more than comfortable flat shoes and a water bottle.
Vieux Nice heritage circuit (2-3 hours)
Start at Place Garibaldi, with its trompe-l’œil facades, and head south down Rue Pairolière to Place Saint-François, the old fish market square with its communal fountain. Continue to Place Rossetti, the Catholic heart of the Old Town, where Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate’s coloured tile dome sits opposite Fenocchio, the gelato shop with over 90 flavours. From there, Rue Droite passes Palais Lascaris, and Rue Saint-François de Paule runs past Maison Auer, a confectioner trading since 1820, ending at Cours Saleya’s market stalls. Vieux Nice is entirely stone-paved and pedestrian; the streets are too narrow and stepped for a bicycle, a scooter, or a suitcase with wheels.
Castle Hill panorama and descent (1.5-2 hours)
The hill itself rises 93m above the Old Town. Climb the 213 steps of Montée Lesage beside Tour Bellanda, pause at the Bellanda terrace for the full curve of the Baie des Anges, then continue up to the 1885 artificial waterfall. The perimeter paths look out over Port Lympia and Mont Boron; the old cemetery on the hill holds the grave of Léon Gambetta. Descend the eastern flank down to Port Lympia via Rue Foresta, or take the free lift down if it’s still running (10:00-17:25).
Mont Boron to Fort du Mont Alban (2.5-3.5 hours)
Starting from Boulevard Carnot at the eastern end of Port Lympia, or from Bus 30’s Mont Boron stop (routes and fares at lignesdazur.com ), this route climbs through the Aleppo pine forest of the 57-hectare Parc du Mont Boron to the 16th-century stone fortress Fort du Mont Alban at 220m. The summit gives two views in opposite directions: west over the Baie des Anges and Nice, east over Cap Ferrat and Villefranche’s harbour.
Sentier du Littoral, Cap de Nice (1.5 hours)
From Coco Beach east of Port Lympia, a paved path cut into the limestone cliffs follows the Cap de Nice coastline toward the Princess Grace boulevard and on to Villefranche. The path closes during heavy swells (coup de mer), so check conditions before setting out on a windy day.

The verdict
