Nice: Best Views for Photographers
Nice is one of the more photogenic cities on the coast, but the good shots depend as much on timing as on location. Here are six spots worth setting an alarm for, and the hour that makes each one work.
Castle Hill, at golden hour
The view from Colline du Château over the ochre roofs of Vieux Nice and the sweep of the Baie des Anges is the definitive Nice photograph. Shoot it in the last hour of light or just after sunset, when the city lights come on and the bay turns from blue to gold. The free lift saves the climb if you are carrying gear.
The Promenade des Anglais and the blue chairs
The blue chairs against the sea are the classic, simple Nice shot. They were removed for restoration and reinstalled in stages through 2026, so check they are back in your stretch before building a shot around them. Early morning gives you soft light and an empty promenade before the crowds and the heat arrive.
Vieux Nice’s lanes
The narrow old-town streets, with their pastel façades and shuttered windows, reward wandering with a lens. For the rooftop-and-bell-tower composition, shoot from one of the small landings partway up the Castle Hill stairs, where the lanes open out below you. Late morning light reaches down into the streets.
Place Masséna, by day and by night
The black-and-white checkerboard paving is a strong graphic shot in flat daytime light. Come back after dark for Jaume Plensa’s seven seated figures, lit on their columns above the square, which read completely differently at night. Both work; the square is one of the few spots that photographs twice.
Cours Saleya market
The flower and produce market is at its best for a photographer in the first hour after opening, when the stalls are freshest and the light is low and soft. Come by 8am, before the tour groups fill the aisles, and shoot the colour of the flower stalls against the ochre buildings behind.
Rauba-Capeu, the sunset spot
The under-used one. The clifftop viewpoint between the port and the old town looks back at the Castle Hill cliff and the bay, and it catches the sunset without the crowds that gather on the Promenade. A quiet alternative for the same golden light.
