Romantic Nice for Two
The romantic version of Nice runs on timing more than venue: the same viewpoints and coves that pack out at midday empty out by evening, and the best of them cost nothing at all.
Sunset at Pointe Rauba Capeù
Where the Promenade des Anglais curves around the base of Castle Hill into Quai des États-Unis, the rocky point catches the full sweep of the Baie des Anges and the Belle Époque facades behind it as the sun drops. It’s a five-minute walk from Vieux Nice and free at any hour.
Dinner on the rocks
Le Plongeoir, at 60 Boulevard Franck Pilatte, serves dinner on a platform built into a rock outcrop over the sea; tables book out weeks ahead in summer, so reserve early at leplongeoir.com . For traditional Niçoise cooking instead, La Merenda on Rue Raoul Bosio has no phone line: reservations go in person or through its site, for food from chef Dominique Le Stanc. Both sit inside Vieux Nice, a short walk from each other.
Castle Hill, away from the crowds
The free lift at 1 Rue des Ponchettes runs until 17:25 (park and lift hours are posted at nicetourisme.com ); arriving on the last run up leaves time to walk the perimeter paths past the 1885 waterfall before the light goes, then take the 213 steps of Montée Lesage back down once the lift has stopped for the night. What’s at the top is ruins from the fortress Louis XIV’s troops demolished in 1706, not a castle interior, and there’s no aviary or funicular up there either, just the view.
Èze village at golden hour
Bus 82 from Nice reaches Èze village in about 35 minutes for the standard €1.70 fare. The Jardin Exotique, at the top of the village, holds cactus and succulent terraces with a Riviera view running from Saint-Tropez to Italy; entry runs €8-10. The restaurant terrace at Château de la Chèvre d’Or looks over the same coastline from inside the ramparts, for a meal rather than a photo stop.
Cap d’Ail’s coastal path
