Nice Sightseeing: Museums to Cathedrals
Nice holds two artists’ museums, a national cathedral belonging to a foreign government, and a ruined fortress site that gets mistaken for all three, so the itinerary below sorts out which is which before it sorts out the queues.
Musée Matisse, Cimiez
At 164 Avenue des Arènes de Cimiez, in a 17th-century red-ochre Genoese villa, the museum traces Matisse from early realism through Fauvism to the cut-out gouaches he made near the end of his life, alongside furniture and sculpture from his own collection. Open daily except Tuesday, 10:00-18:00 April to October and 10:00-17:00 the rest of the year, with a scheduled closure from 26 May to 17 June 2026. Standard adult admission is €12, included in the 4-day €15 municipal museum pass; under 18 is free. Bus 5 or 33 stops at Arènes/Musée Matisse. Musée National Marc Chagall
At 36 Avenue Docteur Ménard, near Gare Thiers and at the foot of the same Cimiez hill as the Matisse museum rather than beside it, this purpose-built museum opened in 1973 to house Chagall’s 17 large canvases of the Message Biblique, plus a stained-glass concert hall and mosaics. Open daily except Tuesday, 10:00-18:00 May to October and 10:00-17:00 the rest of the year, with a midday room closure some days from 13:00 to 14:30; allow 90 minutes. Tickets run €10 outside temporary exhibitions and €12 during them, reduced €8-10, free on the first Sunday of the month and for under-25 EU citizens. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral
Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas, on Avenue Nicolas II in western Nice, off Boulevard Gambetta, was built 1903-1912 under Tsar Nicholas II with five emerald onion domes; French courts ruled it property of the Russian Federation in 2011, and it remains an active parish of the Moscow Patriarchate. Self-guided entry is free; guided tours and the crypt run about €10. Open Monday-Saturday 09:00-18:00 with a weekday lunch closure, and Sunday mornings are restricted during the 10:00-12:30 liturgy. Palais Lascaris and the Old Town
At 15 Rue Droite, this 17th-century Genoese baroque palace holds a monumental frescoed staircase and France’s second-largest collection of historical musical instruments, over 500 pieces. Open daily except Tuesday, 10:00-18:00, €5 or included in the museum pass.
