There’s a specific way to get turned away at St Mark’s Basilica in 2026: show up expecting to walk into the nave for free. That option is gone, and it’s worth knowing exactly what replaced it before you plan the rest of the day around it.
St Mark’s Basilica needs a timed ticket now
Since 1 July 2025 there’s no on-site ticket office at all. Every visitor books a timed slot online through tickets.basilicasanmarco.it , released in 30-minute windows roughly six months ahead. Basilica-only entry runs about €10, and adding the Pala d’Oro altarpiece takes it to around €20. Fuller combinations that also add the Museum and the Loggia dei Cavalli, the balcony with the bronze horses, exist too, but the add-on pricing varies enough across the official site and resellers that it’s worth confirming at booking rather than trusting a fixed figure here. Residents and worshippers registered with the Diocese still enter free with ID, and that stays a narrow case, not a general rule. The dress code is enforced (shoulders and knees covered, no oversized bags), with free left-luggage next door at the Ateneo San Basso.
Doge’s Palace and the museum pass
The St Mark’s Square Museums ticket, covering the Doge’s Palace, the Correr, the Archaeological Museum and the Marciana Library’s Monumental Rooms, costs about €30 booked 30 or more days ahead, about €35 closer to the date or bought on arrival. The Museum Pass Plus tier is now €50 and, as of 2026, also covers Murano’s Glass Museum, Burano’s Lace Museum, Torcello’s museum and Mestre’s MUVEC, well beyond the Standard pass’s four St Mark’s Square sites. Friday and Saturday late openings, 1 May through 26 September 2026, run to 11pm with last entry at 10pm, and are a genuine way to dodge the daytime crowds.
The Campanile, without a guessed price
The tower standing today is a 1912 reconstruction, rebuilt “as it was, where it was” after the 1902 collapse. Lift access is standard, but current listed prices swing widely enough between sources, several clearly bundling an audio guide or a skip-the-line pass, that quoting one figure here would likely be wrong for someone. Confirm the price at the point of booking instead.
Rialto Bridge and Market
The pescheria and erberia run roughly Tuesday to Saturday, 7am to 1pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Arrive before 9am for the fish stalls specifically; later than that, the bridge itself is mostly foot traffic and souvenirs.
The Grand Canal by vaporetto, and the quieter tower across the water
A single €9.50 vaporetto ticket on Line 1 or 2 covers the Grand Canal’s full length, which is the honest way to see it rather than a short gondola loop near the square. San Giorgio Maggiore’s bell tower, a two-minute Line 2 hop from San Zaccaria, runs roughly €6 to €8 by glass-walled lift, capped at six passengers per trip, and stays quieter than the Campanile for the simple reason that most day-trippers skip the crossing. Piazza San Marco is also the first place in the city to flood: MOSE’s barriers rise at a forecast tide of 110cm but don’t stop smaller localized flooding here, and they went up 30 times across the 23 days between 28 January and 19 February 2026.
One more thing to check before booking anything: Venice’s day-visitor access fee ran for 60 tagged days in 2026, ending 27 July, with no 2027 calendar published yet, so nothing is currently being collected. cda.ve.it will carry whichever dates get announced next.
Verdict: book the Basilica’s timed slot the moment your travel dates are fixed, since 30-minute windows do sell out in high season, and treat any Campanile price online as provisional until you’re actually paying it.
