Venice: Easy Day Trips for First-Timers
If it is your first trip and you have one spare day, the temptation is to try to see everything outside Venice at once. Do not. Pick one of the easy options below and keep the rest of the day loose. All of these are simple to reach and hard to get wrong, which is what you want when you are still finding your feet in the lagoon.
The lagoon islands (half a day)
The gentlest first day trip does not even leave the lagoon. Take the ferry from Fondamente Nove to Burano, the island of painted fishermen’s houses, then stop at Murano for its glass furnaces on the way back. A 24-hour vaporetto pass at about EUR 25 covers it (verify on site), and the islands are exempt from the access fee. Half a day is plenty, leaving the afternoon free back in the city. This is the easiest, most rewarding pick for a first-timer.
Padua (25 to 30 minutes)
The shortest mainland trip. Regional trains from Venezia Santa Lucia reach Padua in 25 to 30 minutes for roughly EUR 4 to 9. The draw is the Scrovegni Chapel and Giotto’s frescoes, but you must book ahead, as daytime slots never sell same-day. Even without it, Padua’s squares, market and the Basilica of Saint Anthony make an easy, uncrowded day.
Verona (under an hour)
If you want a bigger day out, Verona is under an hour by fast train, from about EUR 9. The Roman Arena (about EUR 12 entry) is the highlight, and the old centre is walkable and welcoming. Skip Juliet’s House, which is a manufactured 20th-century attraction rather than a real literary site, and spend the time on the Arena and Piazza delle Erbe instead.
How to choose
Short on time or new to trains abroad? Do the islands. Want a taste of mainland Italy with almost no effort? Padua. Happy with a longer travel day for a real Roman monument? Verona. Do not attempt two in one day on a first visit; you will spend it on boats and platforms rather than in either place.
A booking note
If Padua is your pick, book the Scrovegni Chapel before you leave home. Everything else here can be decided the night before. And if your day trip lands on one of the roughly 29 access-fee days between April 3 and July 26, 2026, remember the fee applies only to entering Venice, and only to day-trippers; as an overnight guest you are exempt (verify on site).
