Venice: The Veneto's Quieter Corners
Everyone does Verona and Padua. Fewer travellers use Venice as a base to reach the smaller Veneto towns, which is a shame, because these are where the region feels lived-in rather than visited. All of the places below sit within a day trip of Venice, most reachable by train or a short onward bus, and none draws the crowds of the headline sights.
Padua’s Orto Botanico
Padua holds the oldest university botanical garden still in its original place, founded in 1545 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a calm, scholarly counterpoint to the Scrovegni Chapel across town, with a modern glasshouse of climate zones alongside the Renaissance beds.
Bassano del Grappa
North toward the mountains, Bassano sits on the Brenta river under a covered wooden bridge designed by Palladio, the Ponte degli Alpini, rebuilt many times but always to his plan. The town gives its name to grappa, and the old centre is a pleasant, uncrowded half day.
Asolo
Called the town of a hundred horizons, hilltop Asolo is a walled medieval borgo of arcaded streets and long views over the foothills, long a retreat for writers and artists. It takes a little effort to reach by bus, which is exactly why it stays quiet.
The Euganean Hills and spa towns
South of Padua, the volcanic Euganean Hills rise from the plain with vineyards, monasteries and the thermal-spa towns of Abano and Montegrotto, where you can soak in hot mineral pools. Petrarch spent his last years in the village of Arqua Petrarca here, one of Italy’s prettiest small villages.
Este and Monselice
These two small walled towns south of Padua have hilltop castles, quiet piazzas and none of the tour-bus traffic of the big names, an easy add-on by regional train for anyone who likes a castle and a slow lunch.
Soave
East of Verona, Soave is a compact walled town crowned by a scaligero castle and ringed by the vineyards that make its namesake white wine. It rewards a short visit and a tasting far more than its modest fame suggests.
The Brenta Riviera villas
Between Venice and Padua, the Brenta canal is lined with grand Venetian villas built as summer retreats, several open to visitors and reachable by bus or a slow boat cruise from Venice. Villa Pisani at Stra, with its huge park and maze, is the standout.
Planning notes
