Romantic Zermatt: Sunrise Trains and Dinners
Zermatt suits couples because the mountain does most of the work: early light on the Matterhorn, quiet lakes, mountain restaurants and a car-free village with no traffic noise. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF), and the resort is expensive, so book dinners and the sunrise train well ahead. Cars stop at Täsch, and the shuttle train from there to the village takes 12 minutes.
Dawn on the Kirchbrücke
The small pedestrian bridge over the Mattervispa near the parish church is free and is the classic spot to watch first light reach the Matterhorn. Go before sunrise and bring a warm layer, because the valley is cold in the early hours. Clear skies are never guaranteed, so allow for a second morning if cloud sits on the peak.
Sunrise train to Gornergrat
Every Sunday from July to September a special early train climbs to Gornergrat at 3,089 m for sunrise. The ticket costs CHF 138 without breakfast and CHF 174 with a breakfast buffet at the restaurant on the summit. The Swiss Travel Pass price is CHF 69 or CHF 105. Book ahead because places are limited. It is cold and windy at the top, so dress for winter and drink water, since the altitude can bring headache or tiredness. Details are on the Gornergrat sunrise page .
Stellisee at first light
The Stellisee, at 2,537 m, is a small lake that can mirror the Matterhorn on a still morning. You reach it by the Sunnegga and Blauherd lifts and then a walk of about 20 minutes. It is a summer outing, because the lifts close between the end of the summer season in mid-October and late November. The lake is for looking at rather than swimming, since the glacial water is very cold and there are no boats to hire.
Mountain dinners
Chez Vrony in the hamlet of Findeln, at about 2,130 m, is a family restaurant with a tearoom dating from 1922 in a house from 1900. It serves organic produce from alpine-grazed livestock, and the phone number is +41 27 967 25 52. Book ahead. See the Chez Vrony listing .
Restaurant Zum See stands in the hamlet of Zum See at 1,766 m. It is a historic chalet that opens in summer and winter and lists seafood as a specialty, and you can phone +41 27 967 20 45 to reserve. In the village, Ferdinand by CERVO is a Swiss restaurant at the CERVO Mountain Resort with raclette that guests melt at the table. It serves dinner only and its hours vary by season. See the Ferdinand listing .
Where to stay
The 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat sits at the top of the railway and was trading in 2026. It suits a night that begins with sunset and ends with sunrise, but it is at altitude, so take it easy on arrival. See the hotel site . Zermatt Bergbahnen also sells a VIP gondola with leather seating and champagne, so ask for the current price when you book. Hotel searches are on Booking.com .
Timing
Lifts and trains close for breaks in late autumn, so visit between June and September for the lakes and the sunrise train, or in December for the winter season. Check the Gornergrat timetable in October and November.
