Where to Spend a Day in Geneva
Geneva rewards a slow visitor more than a rushed one: the best of it sits within a twenty-minute walk of the lake, and a lot of it costs nothing at all.
Start free, by the water
The Jet d’Eau is visible from most of the harbor quays at no cost, though it shuts down in strong wind or frost, so check before planning a photo stop. A few minutes east along the Right Bank, Bains des Pâquis charges CHF 2 for lake swimming off its 1872 pier, with a hammam and sauna area at CHF 22 and fondue au crémant at the on-site buvette for CHF 27 (reserve by phone). Every permanent collection at the city’s municipal museums, including the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire and Maison Tavel, is free every day, not on scattered dates.
The Old Town on foot
Climb from Place du Bourg-de-Four, Geneva’s oldest square, into the Vieille Ville’s cobbled lanes toward St. Pierre Cathedral. The Romanesque and Gothic nave is free to enter; the north and south towers cost CHF 7 for a 360-degree view over the rooftops to Mont Blanc, and the archaeological crypt beneath is a separate CHF 8, or CHF 12 combined with the towers. International Geneva
The Palais des Nations, UN headquarters in Pregny, only admits visitors on a guided tour booked through ungeneva.org ; adult tickets are CHF 25, CHF 22 for students, seniors and people with disabilities, CHF 14 for ages 14-17, and CHF 13 for children 6-13. Bring a passport or national ID card, since driving licences are not accepted at the gate, and book a month or two ahead as slots release on the 20th of the prior month. Across the road, CERN’s Science Gateway is free to enter, with online booking recommended up to a month out; guided lab tours are released on-site two hours before they start and go first-come, first-served.
Carouge for the afternoon
South across the Arve, Carouge was laid out by the House of Savoy in the 18th century and still reads as a different town, with Italianate courtyards, small ateliers and shaded squares around Place du Marché. Trams 12 and 18 run there from the center in under fifteen minutes.
The verdict
Do the free lakeside and Old Town stretch on your first morning, and save the CHF 25 UN tour or a CERN slot for a day you’ve booked ahead of time; neither works as a walk-in.
