Day Trips From Geneva by Train
Six real day trips work from Geneva, by train or direct bus; the trick is knowing which needs a passport and which route to skip.
Lausanne and Lavaux, by SBB
Geneva to Lausanne runs every 15 minutes and takes 36-45 minutes on SBB/CFF , with a round-trip fare in the approximate CHF 40s range for a standard adult ticket, cheaper with a Half-Fare Card; check the exact fare before you travel, since Supersaver pricing varies by day. See the Olympic Museum (CHF 20 adult, CHF 14 reduced) and the Gothic cathedral, then walk or take a local train out to the UNESCO-listed Lavaux terraced vineyards between Saint-Saphorin and Lutry.
Montreux and Château de Chillon
An hour east by direct SBB train. The medieval fortress sits directly on the water: CHF 15 for adults, CHF 10.50 for children, CHF 39 for a family ticket (chillon.ch has current hours). Walk the lakeside promenade past the Freddie Mercury statue before or after.
Annecy, France
Roughly 45-50 minutes south by direct bus (TPG, Alpbus or FlixBus from the Gare Routière). The medieval canal town centers on the Château d’Annecy and the Palais de l’Île; bring a physical passport or national ID card, since Swiss and French border checks on this route are routine even within Schengen.
Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi
Take the direct bus, about 1h15 from the Gare Routière; the train alternative runs 2.5-3 hours with two transfers and isn’t worth it for a single day. The Aiguille du Midi cable car is dynamically priced, roughly €60-83 round trip depending on date, run by a French operator, so expect the fare to move with demand and to pay in euros. Gruyères
About 1h45 by train with transfers at Palézieux and Bulle. The walled medieval town holds the Château de Gruyères, La Maison du Gruyère cheese dairy, and the HR Giger Museum and Bar.
Mont Salève, the closest of all
Take TPG bus 8 to Veyrier-Douane, then walk about 500 meters across the French border, passport or ID required, to the reopened Téléphérique du Salève. Round trip is €18 adult, €13 reduced, €6.50 for ages 4-15; a combined TPG-plus-cable-car pass costs CHF 21. Up here you’ll find hiking trails, a paragliding launch and a panoramic terrace looking back over Geneva to Mont Blanc, but no downhill runs or lifts.
