Romantic Vilnius: What Actually Works
The rooftop bar is the wrong instinct in Vilnius. This is a low, horizontal Baroque city, and the good rooms are underneath it: vaulted brick cellars in buildings three and four hundred years old, lit by candles because there is no daylight to compete with. Get that one decision right and a weekend here is much better than the standard city-break script suggests.

The cellars, which are the point
Old Town Baroque houses sit on vaulted brick basements and several of them are dining rooms. Restaurant Lokys on Stiklių has been run by the same family since 1972 and is the oldest restaurant in the Old Town; it keeps its own site . Afterwards, Nick & Nora at Stiklių g. 3 and Apoteka Bar at Visų Šventųjų g. 5 are both a couple of minutes’ walk, and Etmonų Špunka is the Užupis equivalent. Is the balloon flight worth it for two?
Once, and only with a spare morning in hand. Vilnius is one of the very few European capitals that lets balloons fly over its historic centre, which is the whole argument, and shared flights run April to October at roughly €140 to €150 per person, dawn or last light. Private charters start near €699. Wind cancels more flights than rain does, so book it on your first morning and treat the second as the reserve. The best thing here costs nothing
Walk the Vilnia from the Bernardine Garden into Užupis at dusk. The self-declared republic across the river has its 41-article constitution mounted along Paupio Street in dozens of languages, a bronze angel on a column in the square and a working art incubator behind it, and none of it charges. Go Vilnius has a route through . Finish at the Subačius viewpoint, corner of Subačiaus and Maironio, open around the clock with the lit Old Town below. Twenty minutes, no tickets, better than most things you could pay for.
Trakai, on the water rather than in the courtyard
The island castle 28km west is fine inside and considerably better from a rowboat at golden hour, with the red brick going warm across Lake Galvė. The train is 30 to 35 minutes and €1.50 to €2.00 each, running every one to two hours with no advance booking, so the whole outing costs very little if you skip the museum ticket; Go Vilnius covers the boating . In hard winters the lake freezes and a carriage along the shore replaces the boat.
Where to stay, briefly
Hotel PACAI occupies a 1677 Baroque palace renovated in 2018, and Stikliai Hotel sits in the Old Town’s glass quarter. Both are genuinely good and both are a one-night proposition on most budgets; spend the other nights ten minutes out and put the difference into dinner. One cellar dinner, one balloon flight, and the Užupis walk on every evening you are here. That is the whole formula, and the free part of it is the part people remember.
