The rooftop bar is the wrong instinct in Vilnius. This is a low, horizontal Baroque city, and the good rooms are underneath it: vaulted brick cellars in buildings three and four hundred years old, lit by candles because there is no daylight to compete with. Get that one decision right and a weekend here is much better than the standard city-break script suggests. Only two trips out of Vilnius genuinely need you to sleep somewhere else. One goes north through Latvia to Estonia. One goes west across Lithuania to the Baltic coast. Everything else sold as a multi-day trip from here is a day trip with a hotel bolted onto it, and the hotel is the part you do not need. Vilnius is a good family city with a short list, and pretending the list is longer than it is will cost you a day. Four places near Vilnius reward a day out and two well-known ones do not, and the difference is entirely a question of how many hours you spend moving. Anything inside about an hour each way leaves you a real visit. Anything past two hours each way turns into a drive with a site attached, which is a different and worse kind of day. The four that work Trakai, 28km west, is the default and deserves to be.

A guided tour is worth paying for in Vilnius only where the thing you are looking at no longer explains itself. That rules out the Baroque loop, which is signposted and beautiful and needs no commentary. It rules firmly in the Jewish heritage route and the Soviet-occupation route, where most of what mattered has been demolished, renamed or built over, and a guide is the only way to see it at all.

That is the single most useful thing to know before you plan a sightseeing day here, because the Old Town’s 352 UNESCO-inscribed hectares are dense enough that the difference between a good day and a wasted one is the order you walk them in, not the tickets you buy. Two Vilnius activities are worth paying for and most of the rest is the city itself, free, on foot. That is an unusually blunt verdict for a capital of 643,513 people, and it holds because the Old Town is compact, walkable and inscribed by UNESCO across 352 hectares. You do not need a product to experience it. You do need one to get above it. Vilnius doesn’t run a generic circuit of pottery studios and painting classes, whatever a broad “things to do” list might suggest; what it has is four specific, regional crafts, and knowing which four saves you from booking a session that isn’t actually here. Kibinai baking, out at Trakai Karaite families in Trakai, 28km west of Vilnius, teach hands-on classes in kneading butter-rich dough, filling it with spiced lamb or cottage cheese, and crimping the traditional braided rope edge before baking.

Walk the same square kilometer of Vilnius four different ways and you get four different cities: a Baroque capital, a self-declared bohemian republic, a vanished Jewish quarter, and a Soviet occupation that ended within living memory. Climb Castle Hill in the last hour before sunset and you get the whole reason to bring someone to Vilnius in one frame: red-tile roofs, church spires, and the Neris turning gold below.
