Three Days in Trakai: Plan It Yourself
No commercial multi-day tour begins in Trakai. Search for one and every result routes through Vilnius, Kaunas or Riga, because a town of 5,400 people does not support a tour operator that packages nights. The multi-day version of Trakai is one you assemble yourself, and it is better than the packaged alternative anyway.
Why nothing departs from here
The multi-day products that cover Lithuania and the wider Baltics run a circuit along the lines of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, the Curonian Spit and Riga. They are organised and dispatched from the big cities, and Trakai enters those itineraries as a two to three hour stop on the way west from Vilnius. That is the town’s role in the packaged market, and it is why you will not find a Trakai-based operator with a three-day programme.
What Trakai does support is an independent stay: lakeside rooms, a national park, a bog boardwalk, a manor estate across the water, and enough water sports in summer to fill two afternoons.

In-town puts you on Karaimų Street for the early-morning and late-evening hours when the day-trippers are gone, which is the main reason to stay at all. The two out-of-town resorts need a car or a taxi. Compare rates for Trakai on Booking.com before assuming the lakeside town option costs more, because outside July and August it frequently does not.
Day 1: the castles and the Karaim quarter
Island Castle museum first thing, when it opens at 10:00. Eleven exhibition halls of Grand Duchy weaponry, coin hoards and liturgical silver, at €14 adult and €7 reduced from April to September, €12 and €6 from October to March. The brickwork is a reconstruction carried out between 1951 and 1962, after the fortress spent nearly 300 years in ruins following the 1655 war with Muscovy. Then walk south into the Karaim quarter along Karaimų Street: timber cottages with three street-facing windows, the wooden kenesa at number 30, the Seraya Shapshal Karaim Ethnographic Exhibition at number 22. The Karaim are a Turkic-speaking Jewish community following Karaite Judaism, brought from Crimea by Vytautas the Great around 1397; fewer than 200 remain in Lithuania. Book the kibinai baking class at Senoji Kibininė, Karaimų g. 65, for the afternoon, and finish with a lake cruise at €5 to €10 a head before dinner.
Day 2: the lake, the park and the manor
Cycle the marked loop around Lake Galvė, 28 to 32 km through the pine woods of Trakai Historical National Park, with bikes from the tourism centre at Karaimų g. 41. Stop at Užutrakis Manor, Užtrakio g. 17: the 18-hectare park Édouard François André laid out for Count Tiškevičius with 20 linked ponds and marble statues, free and open year-round, and the Neo-Classical palace interior Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00. Afternoon on the Varnikai bog boardwalk, 3.5 km east: a 4.5 to 5.0 km loop through 200-year-old oak wood onto 1.4 km of planking over the Ilgelis peat bog.
Day 3: out of town, or up in the air
Two genuine options. Kernavė, roughly 35 km north, is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site with five hillfort mounds above the Pajauta valley and a modern archaeological museum; it needs a car or a private transfer. Aukštadvaris Regional Park, about 25 km southwest on the A16, has the Devil’s Pit, a 40-metre-deep glacial kettle hole in pine forest.
Or stay put and fly. An hour in a hot air balloon over the castle and the 21 islands of Lake Galvė, sunrise or sunset, runs €150 to €220 a head. Balloon flights over Trakai are bookable on GetYourGuide . Weather cancels them regularly, so put the flight on day two if the forecast is better then and move the excursion to day three.
Getting around across three days
Trains from Vilnius take 30 to 35 minutes at €1.50 to €2.00, buses 40 to 55 minutes at €1.60 to €2.50. Both stop south of the castle: the railway station 2.8 to 3.0 km out, the bus station about 2 km. Timetables are on ltglink.lt . There is no sightseeing bus, no tram and no metro in Trakai, and the outlying sites need a bicycle, a car or a taxi. Kernavė and Aukštadvaris are not reachable on the local network in a comfortable day without one.
Should you sleep in Trakai or day trip from Vilnius?
Day trip if you want the castle and lunch. Stay if you want the lake, the bog and the manor as well, or if you want the castle without a crowd in front of it. The train back to Vilnius takes half an hour either way, so the room is the entire cost of the upgrade and the return on it is the early mornings.
Winter changes the plan
From November to March the lake freezes, and every boat, kayak, paddleboard and cruise on Lake Galvė stops from around October until April. Day 2 loses its water half. In exchange you get skating on the lake in front of the castle, cross-country skiing and ice fishing, and in mid-February the 25-metre ice hole swimming competition cut into the ice opposite the fortress.
Reserve your first night, not your last, at the in-town property. Whatever you book further out, the morning you want is the one where you walk to the footbridge at eight and find nobody on it.
