Romantic Stays Near Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe is a romantic trip of a quiet kind. There are no beaches, no nightlife and no spa district. What you get is a night close to the park, sunrise over open grassland and a jeep drive where the only other company is elephants. The pace is early to bed and early to rise, which suits couples who like wildlife more than crowds. Sleeping inside the park is not permitted, so the choice comes down to where you stay on its edge.
Where to stay
Rates change often, so check each lodge’s own page and compare dates.
Mahoora Tented Safari Camp is a tented safari camp near the park’s eastern border. The operator and listing pages show private bathrooms. Check the camp page for what the rate includes, since meals and safaris are sometimes bundled.
Kalu’s Hideaway has about 14 rooms, a pool and about five acres of grounds by the reservoir, 10 to 15 minutes from the park gate. It is owned by Romesh Kaluwitharana, a former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman and member of the 1996 World Cup winning side.
Centauria Wild and Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort are both listed within about 15 minutes of the park. The Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort has a pool.
A private jeep for two
The best shared experience is a late-afternoon safari in a jeep of your own. Hire is priced per jeep, which seats up to 6, so a couple pays the same as a larger group; roughly LKR 12,000 to 16,500 (USD 40 to 55) for 3 to 4 hours, plus park fees. Ask for the full price in writing, including park tickets. The park closes at 18:00, so you spend the last light over the reservoir and leave as the gates close. You stay seated with an approved guide throughout, and sightings are very likely but never guaranteed.
Early morning
If you prefer cool air and fewer vehicles, take the dawn drive instead. Gates open at 06:00, so plan to leave your room around 05:30. Pack a light layer, sun protection and water.
Best season and timing
Elephants are visible all year. The dry season, about May to September, brings herds to the water. Heavy monsoon rain can cause floods and landslides on the roads, so check FCDO advice and the forecast before you commit to dates.
Make it a longer trip
Udawalawe is usually one or two nights. It pairs with Ella, Yala, Tangalle or Mirissa. From Ella it is about 100 km and 2.5 hours, and Tangalle is about 54 km and 1.5 hours away, which makes a beach finish easy. See the multi-day page for sample routes.
