Day Trips from Udawalawe
Udawalawe is mostly a stop of one or two nights, not a base for many day trips. A morning jeep safari already fills the best hours of the day. The options below are the realistic ones. All distances are by private car and approximate.
Yala National Park via Tissamaharama
Tissamaharama, the usual base for Yala, is about 71 km from Udawalawe, around 1.5 to 2 hours. That makes Yala better as the next leg of a route than as a same-day return. Yala’s blocks close at times for dry-weather rest: Blocks 1 and 2 were shut from 14 September to 15 October 2026, and closures recur, so check with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before you book.
Bundala National Park
Bundala is a wetland park near Hambantota, with its entrance about 18 km east of the town. It was declared a Ramsar wetland in 1991 and a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2005. It is known for waterbirds between September and March, and flamingo numbers vary from year to year. Allow roughly 2 hours by car from Udawalawe and confirm with your driver. Fees and hours differ between sources, so check before you go.
Kataragama
Kataragama lies about 16 km beyond Tissamaharama, roughly 90 km from Udawalawe. It is sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims and is also visited by Vedda people. The main sites are the Kataragama Devalaya and the Kiri Vehera stupa. Treat it as a place of worship: dress modestly, remove shoes and keep voices low. Evening puja is held at the Devalaya; ask locally for the time.
Ella is a transfer, not a day trip
Ella is about 100 km and 2.5 hours from Udawalawe each way, which is too far for a comfortable return day. Treat it as a one-way transfer and break the drive. Buduruwagala rock carvings near Wellawaya are a natural stop, and Ravana Falls, about 5 km from Ella on the Ella to Wellawaya road, is commonly given as about 25 m high. Note that no through Kandy to Ella train runs at present; Nanu Oya to Ella to Badulla does, so check railway.gov.lk.
Mirissa and Galle
Galle is about 130 km and 3 hours from Udawalawe, and Mirissa about 110 km and 2 to 3 hours. Each would mean up to six hours on the road in a day. Include them as later legs of a south-coast trip instead. Whale watching off Mirissa runs November to April, with December to March the peak.
Practical tips
Start early, carry water and sun protection, and keep a flexible plan. Heavy monsoon rain can cause floods and landslides, so check FCDO advice and local weather before you travel. If you want a driver for the day, agree the route and total price in writing first.
