Family Activities in Udawalawe
Udawalawe suits families because the main activities are short, seated and easy to split across a morning and an afternoon. Children under 6 are free at the park, and a single jeep seats up to 6, so most families share one. Prices here are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR) with rough US dollar figures. They come from operators, so check at the gate.
A short jeep safari
A jeep drive of about 3 hours, early morning or late afternoon, is the best fit for children. Hire is priced per jeep, roughly LKR 12,000 to 16,500 (USD 40 to 55), and everyone stays seated with an approved guide throughout. Park fees for a child aged 6 to 12 are about USD 15 plus tax, around USD 18 all in at operator rates, and children under 6 enter free. Sightings of elephants are very likely, though never guaranteed, so tell children the animals decide. Bring sun protection, water and a bandana or scarf to cut the dust.
Elephant Transit Home
The Elephant Transit Home raises orphaned calves for release. Families watch the milk feedings from a covered pavilion. Sessions are usually about 10:30, 14:30 and 18:00, but confirm on the day. A child aged 6 to 12 pays about USD 3 plus VAT, under 6 is free, and a foreign adult pays USD 5 plus VAT. The pavilion holds about 350 people and fills on school and public holidays, so arrive early for a good spot. There is no contact with the calves.
Pool time
After a morning outing, a pool is the easy way to spend the heat of the day. Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort lists an outdoor pool and a children’s pool. Kalu’s Hideaway, with about 14 rooms, also has a pool. Check each lodge for its child policies before booking.
Safety with wild elephants
Never feed wild elephants, including the bulls that wait beside vehicles on the dam road. Signboards state that feeding is an offence. Keep children inside the vehicle and keep hands and arms in. Elephant rides, bathing and walks with elephants are not offered at Udawalawe, and Pinnawala, which sells commercial bathing, is criticised for its welfare record, so skip it. The reservoir has crocodiles and is not for swimming.
Planning
Sleeping inside the park is not permitted, so stay in Udawalawe town or a lodge near the park. Plan one or two nights, since few families stay longer. Heavy monsoon rain can cause floods and landslides, so check FCDO advice before you travel.
