Romantic Stays and Sunsets in Nakuru
Travel advice, 31 October 2026: Kenya is at Level 3 (“Reconsider Travel”) in the US State Department system and an Ebola outbreak is being reported in Nairobi. Nakuru is outside the do-not-travel areas the US and UK list. Read the UK government Kenya advice and the CDC notice before you book.
Nakuru is a wildlife destination, so a romantic trip here is built around animals, views and a comfortable lodge, not around spa days or lake cruises. Lake Nakuru has no boat trips, and balloon flights launch near Lake Elementaita, not over Lake Nakuru. What remains is simple and quiet, and it suits couples who like early starts and wide landscapes.
Where to stay
Two lodges sit inside Lake Nakuru National Park and are listed with 2026 rates: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge and Lake Nakuru Lodge. Staying in the park means you are close to the gate for a dawn drive, when the air is cool at about 1,850 m and the animals are most active. Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is another name that appears in listings. Check rates, availability and what each lodge includes with the lodge directly. Compare options on Booking.com .
Sunset at a viewpoint
The park has two good lookouts for the evening light. Baboon Cliff is the highest viewpoint in the park and has a picnic site, and Out of Africa Lookout sits on a cliff above the lake. Gates at Nderit are open from 06:00 to 18:00, so plan to be at the viewpoint in the late afternoon, and confirm hours and which gate is open with the Kenya Wildlife Service or your lodge. Stay near your vehicle and follow the rangers’ guidance when you step out, and keep any food sealed away from the baboons.
A picnic at Lord Egerton Castle
The castle near Njoro has about 52 rooms and lawns that suit a picnic lunch. It was built between 1938 and 1954 by Maurice Egerton, and the local story is that he built it to impress a woman who turned him down, which gives the visit a romantic edge. Fees vary by source, so ask the castle before you go.
A day out at Lake Elementaita
Lake Elementaita is about 25 to 30 km from Nakuru and is a quiet place for scenery and birdwatching. Flamingos have been very scarce there recently, so go for the views and the birds. Balloon flights are offered near the lake; confirm the operator and the price before you plan a surprise.
What a couple pays
A non-resident adult pays USD 90 for the park for 24 hours, and the fee covers one entry. Kenya residents pay KSh 2,025 and East African citizens KSh 1,500. Rates come from the October 2025 KWS fee schedule , and the fees have been challenged in the High Court, so confirm on KWSPay , where fees are paid online in advance.
