Romantic Spots in Siauliai
Šiauliai is a modest city, and its romance is a quiet, outdoor kind. Think gardens, lakesides and evening walks rather than spa breaks, a handful of places that suit a slow day for two. Allow a weekend at most, and pair it with a longer Baltic trip. Prices are in euros.
The rose park at Frenkel Villa
The park at Vilniaus g. 74 is free and open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. It holds about 1,000 rose bushes, which are at their best in summer. The Art Nouveau villa that stands in it dates from 1908. In summer the grounds host a music festival: the 23rd edition ran from 6 July to 27 August 2026, so check the Aušra Museum programme if you want an evening concert.
Sunset at Lake Rėkyva
Lake Rėkyva lies on the southern edge of the city. The city tourist office recommends its renovated bridge, which has an observation deck, as a sunset spot, and the lake has a sandy beach. It is a flat, open landscape, so the sky does the work.
Evening at Sundial Square and the boulevard
Sundial Square is free and always open. In the evening the square is lit, and the renovated amphitheatre gives a place to sit. The tall obelisk topped by the gilded Archer is the centre point. From the square, the pedestrian boulevard Vilniaus gatvė leads to the Bell of Love sculpture, whose heart-shaped opening is said to catch the sun around the equinoxes.
Lake Talkša at dawn or dusk
The 5 km Talkša eco trail has 19 information stops in three languages, and it passes the Gate of Love and a spot called the Place for Dreams. The route ends at the Salduvė hillfort, a good place for sunrise, about 5 km from the centre. The Iron Fox sculpture by the lake is a short stop on the way. A bike path of 1.8 km also runs along the shore. Winter paths can be icy, so wear shoes with grip.
A chocolate tasting for two
The Rūta chocolate museum at Tilžės g. 133 runs a two-hour guided visit with tasting at 20 EUR per person. The tourist office lists it for groups of 6 to 20 with a minimum group charge of 120 EUR, so phone ahead on +370 610 41 050 to ask what suits a couple.
A balloon flight
Hot-air balloon flights over Šiauliai are run only by prior arrangement and in suitable weather. The city tourist office on Vilniaus g. 213-90 (+370 41 523 110) is the place to ask about current options.
Where to stay and how to plan
Stay in the centre if you can, so that the boulevard, Sundial Square and the rose park are all on foot. One or two nights is enough for the park, a sunset and a lakeside walk.
