Guided Visits and Tours in Siauliai
Organised sightseeing in Šiauliai is small in scale. The city has no open-top bus and no large tour operators of its own. What it does have is a set of guided visits run by museums and venues, plus day tours to the Hill of Crosses that are sold from Riga and Vilnius. This page lists what can be arranged, with prices from the venues themselves.
Aušra Museum guided tours
The Aušra Museum runs branches along the boulevard Vilniaus gatvė. A guided tour of the Frenkel Villa (Vilniaus g. 74), the Bicycle Museum (Vilniaus g. 139) or the Photography Museum (Vilniaus g. 140) costs 30 EUR per tour, with no discounts, and is booked through the museum. Ordinary admission is 8 EUR for adults and 4 EUR for reduced tickets. The Frenkel Villa was built in 1908 for a leather industrialist, and its main exhibition covers the Frenkel family and the history of Šiauliai’s Jewish community up to the Holocaust. It is a sober visit and a guide helps with the context.
Admission to every branch is free on the last Sunday of each month, and on special Sundays the museum announces in advance. Each branch is paid for separately.
Cathedral tower
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul was built in the early 1600s in Renaissance style with Mannerist details, and its tower is about 70 m high. The tower can be climbed only with a guide, who is arranged through the city tourist office at Vilniaus g. 213-90 (+370 41 523 110). The tourist office also lists the official routes, among them Top 10 Places, Top 10 Experiences and Šiauliai From Above, a 5 km walk of about five hours that includes the tower.
Chocolate tasting at Rūta
The Rūta museum at Tilžės g. 133 offers a two-hour guided visit with chocolate tasting at 20 EUR per person. Groups are 6 to 20 people, the minimum group charge is 120 EUR, and booking is by phone on +370 610 41 050. Adults are the recommended audience. Entry without a guide is from about 5 to 6 EUR.
Gubernija brewery
Gubernija, founded in 1665, is described as Lithuania’s oldest operating industrial enterprise. Tours run on event days, most recently during the Šiauliai Days festival in September, and some of them are free. Check Gubernija’s own channels for dates, as there is no regular tour schedule.
Hill of Crosses day tours
Day tours that include the Hill of Crosses are sold by third parties from Riga and Vilnius. The hill is about 12 km north of Šiauliai, roughly 220 km and 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Vilnius. Because it is a pilgrimage site, a tour here is quiet and respectful, with time to walk among the crosses. It is free to enter, so you are paying for transport and commentary, not for a ticket.
Booking tips
- Book museum guides, the cathedral tower and Rūta tastings several days ahead, and by phone where listed.
