Saty village, the gateway to the three Kolsay lakes, has heated felt yurt camps with private terraces facing the pine forest, wood-fired saunas, and stargazing with none of Almaty’s light pollution. Kok Tobe at dusk

An evening at the opera
The Abay Opera House in Almaty, built in 1934 in a yellow Italianate style, stages classical opera and ballet with tickets running 1,500 to 8,000 KZT via ticketon.kz. Astana Opera, a 1,250-seat hall opened in 2013, is the equivalent stop if your trip centers on the capital instead.
The verdict
Pair one alpine evening (the gondola or Kok Tobe) with one slow indoor one (the banya or the opera) rather than trying to fit both cities into a short trip; Almaty alone holds enough for a full romantic weekend.
