Kazakhstan Multi-Day Routes
Kazakhstan’s real distances mean the country’s best material sits outside day-trip range. Three routes cover the ground worth the extra nights.
The Zhetysu lakes circuit (3 days, 2 nights, from Almaty)
Day 1: drive to Charyn Canyon for the Valley of Castles hike, then continue roughly 100 kilometers east to Saty village for a homestay or yurt camp dinner of beshbarmak. Day 2: a 4WD UAZ transfer to Lake Kaindy, where sunken spruce trunks pierce the surface of the water; boating and swimming here are both forbidden by park authorities, so this is a viewing and photography stop only. In the afternoon, rent a wooden rowboat or walk the shoreline trail at Kolsay Lake 1. Day 3: drive north into Altyn-Emel National Park to climb the Singing Dune and see the striped chalk badlands of the Aktau Mountains, returning to Almaty by evening. The Southern Silk Road route (3 days, 2 nights)
Take the overnight Talgo train from Almaty-2 to Turkestan, roughly 10 hours, departing near 23:00 and arriving around 09:00. Day 1 in Turkestan covers the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, commissioned by Tamerlane in 1389 and topped with a massive turquoise dome, plus the underground Hilvet mosque. Day 2 runs out to the ruined Silk Road city of Otrar, sacked by Genghis Khan, and the 14th-century mudbrick walls of Sauran, roughly 100 kilometers apart in Turkestan Region (not to be confused with Mangystau, 1,500 kilometers further west). Day 3 continues to Taraz for the Aisha Bibi and Karakhan Mausoleums before the return train or a flight to Almaty. Train schedules and tickets are on the national rail operator’s site .
The Mangystau expedition (4 days, 3 nights, from Aktau)
This one starts with a flight to Aktau on the Caspian coast, over 2,000 kilometers from Almaty. From there, a fully self-sufficient 4WD trip covers the chalk spires of Bozzhyra, an arid limestone desert with no water and no beach despite its nickname, the chalk canyon of Kyzylkup, the spherical rock formations of Torysh, and the underground mosque of Beket-Ata. Camping under desert night skies is the standard overnight arrangement; bring your own water and fuel reserves, since settlements are sparse. The verdict
Pick one route per trip rather than trying to link two; a Zhetysu-to-Turkestan combination alone adds a full extra travel day, and Mangystau is essentially its own separate country trip given the flight required to reach it.
