Kazakhstan Activities by Region
Kazakhstan’s activity map splits into two hubs 1,200 kilometers apart, joined by three long-haul spokes. Almaty gives you the mountains; Astana gives you the architecture; everything else needs at least an overnight.
Almaty’s mountain corridor
Bus #12 runs from Dostyk Avenue to the Medeu base station for 120 KZT, where the 842-step “Stairs of Health” climbs the mudflow dam for canyon views. The historic outdoor speed skating rink at Medeu itself is closed for reconstruction through 2027, so skip any plan built around lacing up skates there. From the same base, the gondola climbs to Shymbulak Resort at 2,260 meters and on to Talgar Pass at 3,200 meters, where Bar3200 serves coffee and lunch with the Zailiyskiy Alatau range laid out below. Back in the city, the Kok Tobe cable car departs from behind Hotel Kazakhstan for a hilltop park with a Ferris wheel and views over the whole Almaty basin.
Almaty’s older streets
Panfilov Park holds the 56-meter wooden Zenkov Cathedral, built in 1907 without a single metal nail, plus the bronze Memorial of Glory. From there it’s a short walk to the Green Bazaar for kazy (smoked horse sausage) and dried Aport apples. For an evening slower than sightseeing, Arasan Wellness & Spa runs Russian banya sessions with birch venik treatments from 2,500 KZT an hour off-peak. Astana’s modern axis
Nurzhol Boulevard runs in a straight line from the Khan Shatyr tent to the 97-meter Baiterek Tower, whose 86-meter gold sphere holds the handprint of Kazakhstan’s first president (2,500 KZT). The National Museum of Kazakhstan houses the Saka-era “Golden Man” burial find, and the Grand Mosque, opened in 2022, is the largest in Central Asia and free to enter outside prayer times.
Beyond the two cities
Charyn Canyon, 220 kilometers east of Almaty, and the Kolsay Lakes, further southeast near Saty village, are the standard nature add-ons, each a half-day drive in its own right rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else. The verdict
Split your trip by hub: two or three days in Almaty for mountains and old streets, two days in Astana for the architecture, and treat Charyn or Kolsay as its own dedicated day rather than an extra stop bolted onto a city tour.

Carry Kazakh tenge in cash for park entrance fees and bus rides; most POS terminals in Almaty and Astana take foreign Visa or Mastercard, but rural eco-posts and Saty guesthouses are cash only.
