Romantic Heidelberg: Sunsets and Dinners
Heidelberg has long been tied to German Romanticism: poets such as Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano gathered here between 1805 and 1808 and published the folk song collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The red sandstone castle, the arched Old Bridge and the river still set the mood for a couple’s weekend.
Sunset above the river
The Philosophenweg climbs the north-bank slope of the Heiligenberg and looks straight across to the castle. The Philosophengärtchen terrace along the way has benches facing the view. The usual approach is the Schlangenweg, steep cobbled switchbacks that become slippery in rain, leaves and frost, so go up in daylight and wear shoes with grip. Allow about an hour for the climb and a stroll.
The Old Bridge and the castle gardens
Cross the Alte Brücke at dusk, when the castle is lit and the bridge gate and the bronze monkey sculpture draw a few visitors. The castle gardens are open in daylight hours, and the courtyard and terrace are open daily until 18:00. The Schlossticket costs €11 adult until 31 December 2026, then €12, and includes the funicular, courtyard, Great Tun and Pharmacy Museum.
The castle illumination
On Saturday 10 July and Saturday 4 September 2027 the ruin is lit red and a fireworks display of about 15 minutes starts at 22:15. It is free to watch. Roads close from 16:00, with the Old Bridge closing first, and reopen at about 23:30. There is no parking nearby, so arrive on foot or by public transport. Many couples watch from the Nepomuk-Terrasse at the north end of the Old Bridge, though tables cannot be reserved. Weisse Flotte sells evening cruises with a view of the display from €89.90. Dinner and sweets
Zum Roten Ochsen at Hauptstrasse 217 is a historic student inn run by the Spengel family, and tables are booked by phone. Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg at Leyergasse 6 combines a brewery with a restaurant. For a sweet gift, the Studentenkuss, a chocolate wafer with nougat cream, is sold at Knösel at Haspelgasse 16.
Winter evenings
The Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026 across six Old Town squares, usually about 11:00 to 21:00. An ice rink returns to Karlsplatz beneath the castle. Weisse Flotte offers a 50-minute mulled wine cruise on the Neckar from €22 in winter.
Planning tips
