Heidelberg Activities: Castle and Old Town
Heidelberg packs its main activities into a few kilometres: a castle on the south slope, a pedestrian Old Town along the Neckar and a wooded hillside on the opposite bank. Two days cover the core, and winter adds a Christmas market.
Heidelberg Castle
The Schlossticket costs €11 for adults and €5.50 reduced until 31 December 2026, then €12 and €6 from 1 January 2027. It includes the return ride on the lower funicular from Kornmarkt, the castle courtyard, the Great Tun, one of the largest wine casks in the world, and the German Pharmacy Museum inside the castle. The grounds are open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30. The state rooms can only be seen on a guided tour, which costs €6 adult or €3 reduced on top of the ticket. Full details are on the castle visitor page .
Up to the Königstuhl
The funicular has two sections that meet at Molkenkur. The Panoramaticket covers the whole line to the summit plus the castle admissions: €17 adult return and €8.50 reduced, or €11 and €5.50 one way. If you only want the summit, the upper section on its own is €7 single or €10 return. Tickets are valid on the day they are validated. Prices are due to rise in January 2027, so check bergbahn-heidelberg.de before you go.
Philosophenweg
This public path runs along the north-bank slope of the Heiligenberg, about 2 km long, and gives the classic view back across the river to the castle. The usual way up is the Schlangenweg, a steep run of cobbled switchbacks that gets slippery in rain, fallen leaves and frost. Wear shoes with grip.
Museums worth the time
The Studentenkarzer at Augustinergasse 2 preserves cells covered in student graffiti from the years 1778 to 1914. A combined ticket with the University Museum and its special exhibition costs €7.50 adult and €5 reduced. From October to May the Karzer opens Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 16:00, and from June to September daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Bags and coats go in lockers. The Kurpfälzisches Museum at Hauptstrasse 97 is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays.
In winter
The Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026 across six Old Town squares, usually from about 11:00 to 21:00, and entry is free. An ice rink returns to Karlsplatz below the castle. The funicular has an annual maintenance shutdown early in the year, so check its timetable for January to March.
Saving money
The HeidelbergCARD costs €25 for one day, €36 for two days and €40 for four days, with reduced rates of €21, €28 and €34. It includes the castle ticket, free entry to the Studentenkarzer, University Museum and several other museums, and free travel on buses, trams and regional trains across the whole VRN network. It pays off if you add a museum or two to a castle day.
Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof lies about 2 km west of the Old Town, so plan a short tram or bus ride to Bismarckplatz. The Altstadt itself is pedestrian, so leave the car at the edge.
