Heidelberg Multi-Day Trips: Trails and Stays
Heidelberg is a compact city, so it works best as a base for several nights rather than as the start of an organised multi-day tour. Beyond that, the area offers long-distance routes that begin or pass nearby, and day trips that you string together from one hotel.
Staying in one place
Two to three nights cover the castle, the Old Town, the Philosophenweg and a museum or two. A fourth night lets you add a day trip, such as Speyer, Schwetzingen or Neckarsteinach. Most day trips start from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, which lies about 2 km west of the Old Town, so a hotel near Bismarckplatz or the Altstadt saves time on the tram.
The HeidelbergCARD suits a multi-night stay. It costs €25 for one day, €36 for two and €40 for four, with reduced fares of €21, €28 and €34 for pupils, students and trainees up to 28. It includes the castle ticket with funicular, free entry to the University Museum, Studentenkarzer and several other museums, and free travel on regional trains across the VRN area, which covers the Speyer and Schwetzingen trips. Details are on heidelberg-marketing.de .
Long-distance walking: the Neckarsteig
The Neckarsteig is a long-distance hiking trail that runs from Heidelberg to Bad Wimpfen, roughly 127 km along the Neckar valley through the Neckartal-Odenwald nature park. Plan it as a walk of several days with nights in the river towns, such as Neckargemünd and Neckarsteinach, and return by train. Stages involve steady climbs and descents, so start with a shorter section if hill walking is new to you. Arrange rooms and any luggage transfers yourself.
By bike
The Neckartal cycle path follows the river upstream. It suits a relaxed ride with stops at the four castles of Neckarsteinach. The Altstadt itself is a pedestrian zone, so join the path from the riverbank.
Along the Castle Road
The Burgenstrasse, or Castle Road, is a touring route that links castles and palaces by car or coach, and the route starts in this region. Plan it as a drive with your own bookings.
Winter and funicular planning
The funicular has an annual maintenance shutdown early in the year, and the city has proposed closing it from early October 2027 to the end of March 2028 for bridge repairs, with replacement buses. If your stay falls then, check bergbahn-heidelberg.de first. The Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026 and makes a good reason for a winter weekend.
