Romantic Galway: Sunsets, Snugs and Rings
A couple’s Galway
Galway suits couples who like evenings: long light over the bay, live music in small rooms and a table somewhere with a good story. Most of this is within walking distance of Eyre Square. Prices are in euro.
Sunset on the Long Walk
The Long Walk is the row of coloured houses along the quay where the Corrib meets Galway Bay, starting beside the Spanish Arch. At sunset the light falls across the bay toward the Burren hills. Walk out at dusk and carry on to the Claddagh.
The Claddagh ring
The ring’s heart stands for love, the hands for friendship and the crown for loyalty. Thomas Dillon’s Claddagh Gold at 1 Quay Street has a small free museum at the back, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00. The firm dates itself to 1750. Who first designed the ring is debated, and Richard Joyce is the name most often given.
Trad snugs and turf fires
Two pubs suit a quiet pair of pints and a tune. The Crane Bar on Sea Road has sessions seven nights a week, with the upstairs room starting around 21:30. Tigh Neachtain at 17 Cross Street has live traditional music during the week and small snugs. Arrive early for a seat, because both fill up.
Dinner in an Orient Express carriage
The Pullman restaurant at Glenlo Abbey Hotel, on the edge of the city beside Lough Corrib, serves meals in two restored Orient Express carriages, Leona from 1927 and Linda from 1954. It reopened after a refurbishment in 2025. Book ahead and ask the hotel for current menus.
A night in Connemara
Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in Connemara is a castle hotel set on a salmon river and woodland. Rooms and fishing terms should be checked with the hotel. Connemara National Park , free to enter, makes a gentle morning walk on its lower trails.
A day at Kylemore
Kylemore Abbey’s neo-Gothic castle, church and walled garden make a good shared day out. Adult tickets are about €18, so check the abbey’s own site.
Weather
Bring waterproofs and expect rain in any month. A dry evening is a bonus; a wet one still fits a pub snug.
Cliffs of Moher together
The cliffs are 1.5 to 2 hours from Galway in County Clare. Stay behind the barriers and keep to the paths in wind.
