Book Kilmainham Gaol the second the 28-day booking window opens, or accept that you are not getting in. That is the single most important sentence in this guide. Dublin Castle’s State Apartments are closed for the entire back half of 2026, so cross that off regardless of what an older guide tells you. And the National Museum of Ireland, which costs nothing, beats most of what visitors pay thirty-plus euro for down the street.

Dublin is worth it, with three 2026-specific caveats nobody puts in the marketing. Book Kilmainham Gaol the second the 28-day window opens, or you will not get in. Skip any plan built around Dublin Castle’s State Apartments, closed for the whole back half of the year. And budget the Guinness Storehouse and the Book of Kells honestly, roughly EUR 50-60 combined before you have eaten lunch. Do all three correctly and Dublin still clears the bar: a free national museum better than most paid attractions, a literary culture four Nobel laureates deep from a city of 1.

Temple Bar is a genuine medieval-and-Georgian street pattern, one of Dublin’s oldest surviving quarters, and it is simultaneously the most overpriced ten streets in the city after dark. Both are true at once. During the day, the cobbles, the street art, and the Saturday food market earn the visit outright. After 8pm on the main square, you are paying EUR 10-12 for a pint that costs EUR 7 a five-minute walk away, for a crowd that is mostly other tourists doing exactly what you are doing.
