Romantic Getaways in Waterville, Kerry
Waterville suits a quiet couples break: a seafront promenade, a dark-sky reserve overhead, good dinners and some of the best coastal driving on the Ring of Kerry. Plan around the Atlantic weather and book restaurants ahead.
Where to stay
Butler Arms Hotel stands on the seafront. It opened in 1884 and reopened in April 2026 under new ownership as a four-star hotel. The Chaplin family stayed here and were given the owner’s suite after they were nearly turned away. Ask the hotel for its current opening days.
Smugglers Inn is on Cliff Road, in a restored farmhouse about 200 years old that was renovated in 2021. It has a restaurant serving lunch and dinner, with seasonal local produce and seafood, and chef Henry Hunt runs the kitchen. It also offers a dome dining experience. Ring ahead on 066 947 4330 to book and to check opening days.
The Old Cable House is a historic cable-station house dating from 1866, and the Bay View Hotel is also listed locally. The Sea Lodge Hotel in the village is closed until further notice.
Stargazing together
Waterville is inside the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve, which reached Gold Tier in 2014, the first Gold Tier reserve in the northern hemisphere. Kerry Dark Sky Tourism runs guided 1.5 hour tours from €35, with the meeting point at the church car park in Castlecove. On a clear night you can also lie back on the sand at Ballinskelligs or Derrynane for free. Wrap up warm.
Abbey Island at low tide
At Derrynane, a path leads across to Abbey Island when the tide is out. Check the tide times first. The south side has unprotected cliff edges, and the path is not suitable for small children, so it suits adults who take care. Derrynane House is open to 1 November 2026, and adults pay €5.
Sunset drives and the promenade
Drive the Skellig Coast at the end of the day. Ballinskelligs Bay and Kerry Cliffs, about 5 minutes short of Portmagee, are good places to watch the light change (Kerry Cliffs is about €5 per person). The Skelligs viewpoint near Ballinskelligs has a small parking bend, so stop only where it is safe. Back in the village, walk the seafront promenade at dusk and look for the bronze Charlie Chaplin statue.
A boat out to the Skelligs
For a day on the water, take a Skellig Michael and Little Skellig cruise from about €42 (Skellig Experience) or about €60 (Casey’s). The trip takes about 2.5 hours and circles the islands without landing. Landings on Skellig Michael involve 618 steep steps, and the island is closed for 2026 and reopens in 2027. Keep a spare day in case the weather cancels the boat.
Swimming and safety
Waterville Strand and Inny Strand are open Atlantic beaches with strong swell. Derrynane has a marked no-swim section. Swim only where a lifeguard flag is up in season.
