Romantic Escapes in Black River
Travel advisory, 31 October 2026: Mauritius is at US Level 2 (exercise increased caution) for crime, and the UK advises avoiding demonstrations and large gatherings after unrest in October 2026. Curfews ended on 19 October. Check your government’s current advice before you book.
Romantic escapes in Black River District
The southwest coast of Mauritius faces the sunset, and its lagoon, highland forest and rum valley make an easy set of dates for two. Prices are in Mauritian rupees (Rs) and are approximate, so confirm them when you book.
Sunset on the water
Catamaran cruises leave from La Balise Marina and Tamarin Bay in the late afternoon and sail along the calm west coast as the sun drops. Shared sunset cruises cost about Rs 2,000 to 3,000 a person, and a private charter for a couple costs about Rs 18,000 to 28,000. Menus and drinks differ by boat, so ask what is included before you pay.
An early morning with dolphins
Spinner and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live off Tamarin Bay. Boats leave around 06:00 to 07:00, and a private boat costs roughly Rs 8,000 to 12,000. Choose a licensed operator, keep your distance and stay out of the water. Skip any boat that offers swims with the animals, because the ministry announced tighter enforcement in October 2026.
A lagoon picnic
Ile aux Benitiers is an uninhabited sandy islet lined with filao trees. Catamaran day trips stop at Crystal Rock for snorkelling in clear shallow water and then land for a grilled lunch on the beach with sega music. A full-day cruise costs roughly Rs 2,500 to 3,500 a person.
Highland views and a long lunch
Chamarel sits on the ridge above the coast. The Ebony Forest Take A Drive jeep tour includes raised walkways and the Sublime Point lookout, with views of the lagoon. It runs at 09:30, 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30, and the 15:30 departure is the latest of the day. The price is Rs 1,600 for non-resident adults. Afterwards the Rhumerie de Chamarel offers a distillery visit and tasting, and its restaurant L’Alchimiste serves Creole and European dishes. Book ahead and check prices on the official site. The Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth Geopark ticket (Rs 800 for adults) covers the coloured dunes and both viewpoints over the waterfall, which drops about 100 m. The plateau is cooler than the coast, which is welcome on a hot day.
A view from the air
Shared helicopter flights over the underwater waterfall, an optical illusion of sand sliding down the sea floor that is visible only from the air, are resold from about 190 to 220 EUR or USD per person. Private charters cost much more.
Where to stay
Flic-en-Flac has a long public beach and plenty of apartments and hotels, while Tamarin and Black River have boutique lodges and villas near the marina. For a quiet evening, watch the sunset from the beach and have dinner in the village. UK advice warns of bag theft in Flic-en-Flac, so keep valuables with you.
Practical notes
- Cyclone season runs from November to May and peaks from January to March, and you cannot leave your accommodation during a cyclone.
- Wear reef shoes for wading, because of sea urchins and stonefish.
- Do not swim at the foot of the Chamarel Waterfall.
