Romantic Bush Stays near Hlabisa
A Bush Break for Two
Hlabisa is a small rural village, and the romantic option here is a night or two inside Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP), where lodges look over waterholes and ridges. The park charges its daily conservation fee to overnight guests: about R300 to R320 per international adult per day. Prices are in rand (R).
Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge
Rhino Ridge sits on a ridge above a waterhole inside the park, run by Isibindi Africa Lodges.
- Honeymoon Bush Villa: a private deck with a plunge pool and a fireplace. Other room types are the Luxury Bush Villa, Safari Rooms and Family Rooms.
- Extras: a shared swimming pool, an organic spa, game drives, guided walks, night drives and birding.
- Rate: the Safari Room is about R5,630 per person sharing per night, full board, from 1 July 2026 to 30 April 2027. Ask for a quote on the villas.
- Getting there: about 1.5 hours from Richards Bay Airport and about 3.5 hours from King Shaka International in Durban. The lodge also advertises an air shuttle to Hluhluwe aerodrome.
Ezemvelo Bush Lodges at Mpila
Mpila Camp in the iMfolozi sector has remote bush lodges run by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Nselweni sleeps two and comes in no-view, semi-view and river-view versions. Hlatikulu and Gqoyeni each sleep eight with a cook and a guide, and Masinda Lodge, about 10 km from camp, sleeps eight with a cook.
The camp’s safari tents and chalets are simple and run off a generator from 06:00 to 22:00. Base rates are about R1,320 for a two-bed safari tent and R1,400 for a two-bed chalet, so confirm when you book. The camp fence keeps elephants out only, and hyena, leopard and lion pass through camps at night, so stay inside your unit after dark.
Hilltop Camp
Hilltop Camp in the Hluhluwe sector has self-catering chalets with forest views, from about R1,650 for two beds. Mtwazi Lodge sleeps eight.
Sundowner Drive from Mpila
An open-vehicle sundowner drive from Mpila costs R420 per person, with a minimum of four people to run it. It leaves at 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 17:00 on Sunday. Book at camp reception.
Planning Notes
The Ezemvelo figures are from the 2025-26 tariff, which ends on 31 October 2026, and a new tariff starts on 1 November. Gates are open about 05:00 to 19:00 in summer and 06:00 to 18:00 in winter, so arrive well before closing. Drive only in daylight on the rural roads, because carjacking is a risk after dark. Northern KwaZulu-Natal is a seasonal malaria area, so ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis.
