Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
The park is the best full day out. Enter at Nyalazi Gate, drive the Mpila and Nyalazi roads, and be out before the gate closes at about 18:00 in winter or 19:00 in summer. The daily conservation fee is about R300 to R320 for an international adult, on the 2025-26 Ezemvelo tariff that ends on 31 October 2026. After rain, check road conditions, because park roads can flood.
St Lucia Estuary
Allow about 1 hour 40 minutes each way to reach St Lucia. Two-hour estuary cruises run from town, and hippos and crocodiles are likely but never certain. Fares are set by the operators, so ask when you book.
False Bay Park
False Bay Park lies about 12 km east of Hluhluwe town, on the western shore of Lake St Lucia. It has self-guided trails, including the 9 km Dukandlovu loop through forest and lakeshore, and fossil ammonites about 60 million years old. Hippos and crocodiles live here, so stay on the marked trails. Pay the iSimangaliso gate fee on arrival.
Hluhluwe Town and DumaZulu
Hluhluwe town is about 57 km from Hlabisa. DumaZulu Traditional Village and Lodge, on Bushlands Road, calls itself South Africa’s biggest cultural village and was established in 1994. It is a staged village, so check entry fees and show times with them on +27 35 562 2260.
Mkuze Game Reserve
Mkuze is a long day trip of about 80 km each way. Its draw is birdlife and hides.
Places That Are Too Far
Royal Natal National Park and the Drakensberg, Rorke’s Drift, Isandlwana and the Durban coast are not day trips from Hlabisa. Ndumo Game Reserve is about 200 km to the north, so treat it as its own trip. Durban is about 3 hours by road, and a bit more.
Driving Tips
Fill your tank in Mtubatuba or Hluhluwe town, because fuel in Hlabisa village is not reliable. Drive only in daylight, with doors locked, because carjacking is a real risk after dark, and stray livestock and walkers on rural roads add to the hazard. Northern KwaZulu-Natal is a seasonal malaria area, so ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis.
