Essaouira and Ouarzazate often get filed as an “optional” third day, which undersells them: either one is a genuine overnight commitment, not a side quest you can skip without noticing the gap.
Essaouira, as a coastal stay
The same 2.5-3 hour route as a rushed day-trip version, but one or two nights actually lets you enjoy the coast, the working fishing port and the seafood rather than turning straight back around. For a coastline and a working fishing port rather than another garden or palace, Essaouira beats Ourika or Agafay on variety alone, which is worth the extra night.
Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, given a proper overnight
The same 3-4 hour drive each way via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, confirmed open and functioning normally post-earthquake , but staying overnight removes the 10-12 hour round-trip slog and suits anyone continuing on toward the desert route.
The Sahara, which is never a day trip
Merzouga, home to Erg Chebbi’s big dunes, is roughly 560km and a genuine 9-10 hours each way; the standard product is a 2-night, 3-day round trip with an overnight stop near the Dades or Todra Gorge each way. Shared tours with half-board and a sunset camel trek run roughly 95-200 euros per person, rising to 500-800 euros or more for a private, luxury version. Zagora, with smaller dunes near Tinfou, is roughly 350km and 6-7 hours each way, shorter and cheaper: the standard 2-day, 1-night round trip runs roughly 65-125 euros per person. Onward to Fez and Casablanca
Casablanca is a straightforward 2 hour 40 minute to 3 hour train on ONCF , Morocco’s national rail operator. Fez’s direct train is a slow 10-11 hours via Casablanca, so flying, or looping through the desert route via Merzouga over several days, is the realistic way to connect the two rather than a same-day hop.
