Agafay gets sold as a taste of the Sahara close to the city, and it’s worth knowing upfront that it isn’t one: it’s real, it’s rocky, and it’s a different landscape entirely from actual sand dunes.
Agafay, correctly described
A rocky plateau about 30km and 40-50 minutes southwest of the city, confirmed by independent distance and terrain checks to be stone rather than sand. Camel rides, quad tours and dinner shows run afternoon into night, with pricing that varies enough by operator to be worth checking on site rather than trusting one quoted figure.
Ourika Valley and Imlil
Ourika is 40-60km and 60-90 minutes each way; Setti Fatma’s seven waterfalls make a roughly two-hour round-trip hike, and the route has substantially recovered from the 2023 earthquake’s landslide disruption and is confirmed running normally. Imlil, roughly 65km and 90 minutes out, works as a drive plus a two to three hour walk around its villages, not a Toubkal summit, which needs a multi-day guided trek. Standard tourist routes function normally, though the wider region is still recovering rather than untouched.
Ouzoud Waterfalls
Roughly 150km and three to three and a half hours out near Azilal, Morocco’s tallest waterfall system and a long but genuinely day-doable option once Ourika and Agafay are done.
Day-doable, but rushed
Essaouira is about 180km, two and a half to three hours each way; the Supratours bus runs 100-125 MAD each way with six daily departures, a shared grand taxi 100-150 MAD, a private transfer up to roughly 1,300 MAD. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate are about 185km via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, open and functioning normally, three to four hours each way; a “day trip” here is realistically a 10-12 hour round trip. What doesn’t belong on this list
The real Sahara, Merzouga or Zagora, is six to ten hours each way under any transport mode and belongs on a multi-day itinerary, never a day trip.
Verdict: pick Ourika, Agafay or Imlil for a comfortable day out, and treat Essaouira or Ait Ben Haddou as a stretch goal only with an early start.
