Kenya Sightseeing: Mara, Amboseli, Nakuru
Mount Kilimanjaro rises behind grazing elephants at Amboseli, and it is the kind of view Kenya produces almost casually. Four parks make the core of any sightseeing plan, each with its own landscape, season and price, and a handful of coastal sights add culture between the safaris.
Maasai Mara National Reserve
Open golden grassland, lion prides, cheetahs hunting gazelle and the chance to see the Big Five make the Mara the best known. Narok County charges non-resident adults US$100 per day from January to June and US$200 from July to December, with ages 9 to 17 at US$50. From late July, herds arrive, and Mara River crossings are most likely from mid-August to September, but never guaranteed. It sits 5 to 6 hours from Nairobi by road, so allow 2 to 3 nights.
Amboseli National Park
The park is flat and open, which makes elephants easy to photograph, especially at dawn when Kilimanjaro at 5,895 m often appears. The non-resident adult fee is US$90 per day and children pay US$45, prepaid on the KWS eCitizen portal . Clear mornings are best, since cloud often covers the summit by midday.
Lake Nakuru National Park
In the Rift Valley, the alkaline lake draws lesser flamingos that feed along the shallows, and the woodland around it holds southern white rhinos. Entry is US$90 for non-resident adults and US$45 for children. Binoculars help much more here than at the other parks, and the water level changes how many birds are present, so go with an open mind about numbers.
Nairobi National Park
Giraffes, lions and rhinos live within sight of the Nairobi skyline, about 20 minutes from downtown. Non-resident adult entry is US$80 and children pay US$40. It works as a first or last sight on a trip, and it pairs with the 11:00 elephant hour at the David Sheldrick Trust, which also asks for a US$20 adult donation.
Coast and culture
Fort Jesus in Mombasa is a Portuguese fortress completed in 1593 and a UNESCO World Heritage site, with entry at US$17 for non-resident adults. Gedi in Kilifi County is a 13th-century Swahili town set within coastal forest, with stone mosques, a palace and coral tombs. Both reward a morning visit before the heat. In Nairobi, the National Museums of Kenya list opening hours and current fees at museums.or.ke .
How to organise it
Take the park fees as the budget core, then add lodging and a driver. Self-drive is possible but the unpaved Mara roads are slow, and a guide knows where animals are. For tours of the highlights, compare Kenya safari tours on GetYourGuide . Visit the Mara and Amboseli in the dry season from June to October for easier animal viewing, and keep a day free in case of rain.
Practical points:
- Government travel advice is worth reading before you book; skip the northern and Somali-border counties.
- An eTA is required before travel, about US$30, applied for at etakenya.go.ke.
- Plastic carrier bags are banned, and single-use plastics are not allowed in parks.
The 3 day itinerary fits Nairobi, a park and a coastal option into a short trip. For accommodation near the parks, look at camps and lodges on Booking.com .
Verdict: choose Amboseli for the photographs, the Mara for the volume of animals, and treat Nakuru as the easy add-on.
