Gdańsk Animal Activities: Zoo, Seals, Birds
Animal activities in Gdańsk come down to three places, and they could hardly be more different: a forest zoo on the city’s northern edge, a seal rescue station at the far end of the Hel Peninsula, and two bird reserves on a quiet island to the east. One takes half a day, one takes a whole day, and one takes binoculars and patience.
Gdańsk Zoo, Oliwa
Gdańsk Zoo (Gdański Ogród Zoologiczny) is at ul. Karwieńska 3, in a wooded valley in the Oliwa district. At 125 hectares it is the largest zoo in Poland by area, holding around 160 species in enclosures spread through the trees. It opens every day of the year from 09:00.
The size is the thing to plan for. The paths are long, so it is a half-day visit at the least, and more with children. High-season tickets from May to September were about 45 PLN regular and 40 PLN reduced. October falls into the cheaper low season, and current prices and closing times are on zoo.gdansk.pl .
To get there, take the SKM to Gdańsk Oliwa, then bus 179 to the zoo gate. SKM tickets come from apps such as Jakdojade or Koleo, station machines, ticket offices or the conductor, and the timetable is on skm.pkp.pl . If you want to stay near Oliwa rather than the Main Town, check Gdańsk hotels on Booking.com .
The Fokarium at Hel
The Fokarium is a seal station run by the University of Gdańsk’s Institute of Oceanography in the town of Hel, at the tip of the peninsula. It cares for Baltic grey seals, and feeding time is the moment to aim for. From October to June the seals are fed at 11:00 and 14:00. In July and August there are four feeds, at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30.
It is open daily all year from 10:00, closing at 16:00 from October to April, 17:00 in May, June and September, and 18:00 in July and August. Details are on fokarium.ug.edu.pl .
Hel is about 100 km from Gdańsk by road and 2 to 2.5 hours by train, and in the warm months a water tram crosses the bay in about 1h50. That makes the seals a full-day trip. Browse Hel day trips on Viator if you want the transport arranged.
Sobieszewo Island’s bird reserves
Sobieszewo Island, on the eastern edge of the city, is protected land with two bird reserves, Ptasi Raj and Mewia Łacha. Nothing here is staged. You walk the marked paths, watch the water and the reed beds, and see whatever happens to be there. Bring binoculars, stay out of the dunes, and expect wind. The city tourism site, visitgdansk.com , covers access and paths. City buses run out to the island from the centre, and the routes and fares are on ztm.gda.pl . A single ride is 4.80 PLN, or 6.00 PLN for a 75-minute ticket if you have to change.
Which one is worth your time
For most visitors the zoo is the best animal activity in Gdańsk, because it is easy to reach and fills a morning on its own. The Fokarium is worth it only as part of a full Hel day, and it pays to arrive for a feed. Sobieszewo suits people who already enjoy birdwatching. For a casual visitor, the morning after an autumn gale, when raw amber washes up on its beach, is the better reason to go.

Before you go
Arrive at the zoo close to 09:00 on a warm day, since animals in large wooded enclosures are easiest to spot in the cool of the morning.
