Gdańsk Four-Day Tricity Circuit
Four days is enough to cover Gdańsk, its castle neighbour and the two other Tricity towns without rushing. The plan below uses Gdańsk Main Town or Granary Island as the base and the SKM train as the connector.
Choosing the first day
Opening days shape the order. The Museum of Gdańsk branches are free on Monday and closed on Tuesday, the Crane is free on Wednesday afternoon, and Malbork Castle is free on Monday for the grounds route only. A Monday start puts the free museums first. If you land at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, the train to Gdańsk Wrzeszcz takes 20 to 25 minutes for 5.40 PLN, and bus 210 reaches the main station in 35 to 45 minutes for 4.80 PLN. Check Gdańsk hotel rates on Booking.com for a base in the Main Town.
Day 1: Main Town
Follow the Royal Way from the Golden Gate to the Green Gate, take in Neptune’s Fountain and Artus Court, and finish on Mariacka. St Mary’s Basilica has a tower of about 400 steps, open in the warmer months, and the basilica is one of the three largest brick churches in the world. Spend the afternoon at the Crane and the Amber Museum.
Day 2: Malbork and Sopot
Catch a morning train to Malbork, about half an hour, and choose the Historical route (80 PLN or 60 PLN in the spring-summer tariff) or the shorter Grounds route (35 PLN or 25 PLN). Return by mid-afternoon and take the SKM to Sopot for about 6.50 PLN. Walk Monciak and the pier at dusk. The pier is paid only from 10 April to 30 September. Book castle entry at zamek.malbork.pl , or compare Malbork tours on GetYourGuide for a guided day.
Day 3: Hel Peninsula
Hel is about 100 km away and 2 to 2.5 hours each way by car or rail. In season, the water tram takes about 1h50 from the Motława quay. The Fokarium cares for grey seals and posts its hours at fokarium.ug.edu.pl . Dunes and the lighthouse fill the rest of the day.
Day 4: Gdynia and the shipyard
Take the SKM to Gdynia, about 35 minutes and 9 to 10 PLN, for the Emigration Museum in the 1933 Marine Transit Terminal. Return in the afternoon to the European Solidarity Centre at Plac Solidarności, which has a free sixth-floor viewing terrace. On a Tuesday, the Museum of the Second World War is free and fits this day instead. Hours for the centre are on ecs.gda.pl .
Where to base yourself
Granary Island and the Main Town put the quay, the Crane and the Royal Way within walking distance. Sopot is an alternative for a seaside base, with the SKM running to Gdańsk every 7 to 15 minutes in the day. The Hel water tram operates in season only, from May to September, so travel by train outside those months. The Sopot pier is paid between 10 April and 30 September and free afterwards.
The verdict
If Hel feels too long, swap it for a second Gdynia or Sopot day and keep the other days unchanged. For more detail on each day, see the four-day itinerary or the three-day version .
Before you go
Stamp paper train tickets on the platform before boarding, and check that your Hel return connection runs late enough for the day you pick.
