Gdańsk with Kids: Ships, Zoo and Science
Children in Gdańsk can climb through the engine room of a steamship that was launched in 1948. That is the best single family stop in the city, and the rest of the list is short but solid.
SS Sołdek and the Maritime Museum
The Sołdek is moored on Ołowianka Island opposite the Crane. It was the first oceangoing steamship built in Poland after the war. Kids can go down to the coal-fired engine room, the crew quarters and the wheelhouse. Ticket prices and opening days for the ship change by season, so check them before you go. The Crane next door has an interactive exhibition, costs 23 PLN (17 PLN reduced) and is free on Wednesday 13:00-17:00. Current hours are on nmm.pl .
A galleon on the harbour
Wooden galleons including the Lew and the Czarna Perła cruise from the quay by the Green Gate in season. Children usually enjoy the open decks. See harbour cruises on GetYourGuide for departure times, and ask the operator whether sailings run on the day you plan to go.
Gdańsk Zoo in Oliwa
The zoo at ul. Karwieńska 3 covers 125 hectares of forested valley, among the largest zoos in Poland. It keeps more than 160 species, including elephants, giraffes, lions and penguins. Take the SKM to Gdańsk Oliwa and continue by local bus or taxi, then check prices and the current bus line at zoo.gda.pl . Give it at least half a day and wear shoes for gravel paths.
Hevelianum
Hevelianum is a science centre inside restored 19th-century fortifications on Gradowa Hill behind the main station, at ul. Gradowa 6. It has hands-on physics and optics experiments and a planetarium. Walking up the hill is free, and the terraces look over the Main Town’s spires and shipyard cranes. Opening days change, so check hevelianum.pl first.
The Amber Museum
The Great Mill at ul. Wielkie Młyny 16 holds a 68-kg lump of raw amber and pieces with spiders and insects caught inside. The family ticket is 99 PLN, adult 37 PLN and reduced 26 PLN. Hours are 10:00-18:00, entry is free on Monday, and it closes on Tuesday. The Artus Court and Main Town Hall branches offer family tickets at 70 PLN.
Getting around with children
The Main Town core is pedestrian, so buses and trams stop at its edge and the last stretch is on foot. ZTM single tickets are 4.80 PLN and valid for 75 minutes, with a reduced fare of 2.40 PLN, and 24-hour tickets are 22 PLN or 11 PLN reduced. From Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, the train to Wrzeszcz takes 20 to 25 minutes for 5.40 PLN. A milk bar lunch of soup or dumplings is cheap and quick before a museum afternoon.
The verdict
With one afternoon, do the Sołdek and the Crane together on a Wednesday, when the Crane is free from 13:00. If the weather is bad, the Amber Museum on a Monday is both dry and free. The zoo is the choice for a full outdoor day. For Sopot and a castle day, see the day trips guide , or search family day tours on Viator .
Before you go
The Main Town is paved in cobbles, so a sturdy stroller helps. ZTM reduced fares are 2.40 PLN for a single ride and 11 PLN for 24 hours, so check which ages qualify.
